PAGE A4, KEIZERTIMES, APRIL 24, 2020 KeizerCommunity KEIZERTIMES.COM Latinx students rewarded for scholarship Avamere K E I Z E R T I M E S SE NIOR HOUSING G U I D E What it lacked in formality, the members of Keiz- er’s Latino Action Committee (LAC) made up for in spirit. On Tuesday, April 21, members of the group hon- ored 20 McNary High School seniors with $300 scholarships drive-thru style, an accommodation for the social distancing required to stop the spread of the pandemic. Despite the limitations, members of the com- mittee as well as two city councilors and the Keizer mayor cheered on the graduates and deployed hasti- ly-crafted noisemakers as they picked up their schol- arship packet. For the past several years, the scholarship awards have been the most forward-facing efforts of the (LAC), but much more is done behind the scenes in terms of advocacy and connection to local resources. The scholarships this year went to: • Vanessa Acosta Acosta who is planning to attend Portland State or Western Oregon Universi- ty and earn a degree in criminal justice. Her cur- rent career goal is becoming a juvenile correctional counselor. • Erika Cervantes Arellano hopes to attend a four-year university and work in the law enforce- ment fi eld. • Jessica Lopez Banda who plans to attend Western Oregon University and pursue a career in social work. • Jesus Castro who plans to attend a four-year school or trade school and become an electrician. • Luz Elena Chavez Chavez who wants to earn an associates degree in accounting at Chemeketa Community College and transfer to Western Ore- gon University and complete a bachelor’s degree in business. • Anthony Chavez Cortes who plans to be a fi tness coach or fi tness nutritionist. • Nuria Sierra-Cortes who plans to attend Western Oregon University and major in American Sign Language with a minor in criminal justice. • Genecis Santiago Espinosa who plans to at- tend a four-year institution and major in business. • Monserrat Falcon who plans to start at Chemeketa Community College and transfer to a four-year school. • Linda Llanos Garcia who plans to attend col- lege and study animation and visual effects. • Nallely Gonzalez who plans to attend college and major in criminal justice or law enforcement. • Luis Lopez who will be attending Corban University to study psychology and, he hopes, play soccer for the Warriors. • Marissa Maciel-Maciel who plans to be a his- Emerald Pointe reports 1 COVID-19 infection KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. MONTHLY RENT: starting at $1 ,350 Two long-term facilities in Keizer have documented cases of COVID-19 infections ac- cording to a list released by the state of Oregon Friday, April 17. Last week, The Oaks at Sherwood Park in south Keiz- er was discovered to be battling one of the larger outbreaks at a long-term facility in the state with 14 reported infections. This week, one resident was reported to have caught the infection at Avamere Court at Keizer, but total cases remain “unknown,” according to the document. The facilities will stay on the list until there are no infections at the site for at least 14 days. The list does not specify whether the residents have re- mained at the facilities or been taken to hospitals or some other facility. It also does not include outcomes of the infections. Long-term care facilities have been ground zero for many of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks. Nationwide, accord- ing to a tally being kept by The Associated Press, more than 8,400 cases have been reported at long-term care facilities.
