Celts get upset over Bend

Leah Doutt led the way
with 20 points and fi ve assists
and Bekah Grimmer added
13 points and seven rebounds
as the McNary girls basketball
team pulled off the upset victo-
ry over Bend on Friday, Feb 14,
defeating the Lava Bears 46-41.
The Celtics started the game
on a 12-2 run, thanks to fi ve
quick points from Doutt, a pair
of buckets by Grimmer and a
3-pointer from Kennedy Buss.
McNary took a 13-6 lead
into the second quarter and
eventually extended the lead
to 13 after two more baskets by
Grimmer.
Kenzie Proctor knocked
down a shot moments later,
but Bend got the defi cit down
to 21-11 before the half — it
was the least amount of points
McNary has given up in a half
during league play.
After Grimmer started the
third quarter with another hoop
to put herself in double-fi gures,
the Lava Bears responded with
an 8-0 run to get themselves
within four. But a pair of free
throws by Grimmer and two
3-pointers from Doutt allowed
the Celtics to get back in con-
trol with an 8-0 run of their
own.
The Celtics began the fourth
quarter with a 31-22 advantage.
Bend cut the lead down to fi ve
with 4:04 left in the fi nal peri-
od. Fortunately for the Celtics,
Doutt was able to seal the win
with her play on both sides of
the court.
With 2:11 left in the game
and McNary clinging to a 36-
31 lead, Doutt nailed her fourth
triple of the contest. Just seconds
later, the junior point guard got
a steal and fi nished a layup on
the other end to put the Celtics
back up by double-digits.
The Celtics offi cially put the
game away after a clutch buck-

thwarted any comeback chance
that Bend had.
McNary returns home on
Friday, Feb. 21 to take on McK-
ay at 7:15.

With Meithof on the

tum back on the McNary
side before the half by nail-
ing his second three of the
game at the buzzer.
But
Mountain View
continued to chip away at
the Celtics lead and even
trimmed the defi cit to two
at 43-41 with 3:33 left in the
third period.
The Cougars appeared to
be on the verge of tying the
game, but when Grant Jordan
was whistled for an offensive
foul, the Mountain View for-
ward let his emotions get the
best of him and was called
for a technical foul.
The game changed from
that point forward.
After
Evan
Cornell
stepped up to hit both
technical foul shots, Kyler
Rodriguez completed the
four-point possession with a
tough layup.
In the fi nal 90 seconds of
the quarter, the Celtics got
