A Keizer police offi cer’s
battle with esophageal cancer
is only getting harder.
Offi cer Dan Carroll, a 14-
year veteran of the Keizer
Police Department (KPD),
was initially diagnosed in May
2019, but a series of escalat-
ing
head-
aches
sent
him back to
Salem Hos-

found that

his spinal fl u-
id, said Windie Carroll, Dan’s
wife.
Windie updated supporters
on a GoFundMe page
Saturday, Feb. 1.
“The doctors have no
options to help him any
longer here in Salem, but
they did research on a cancer
center in Seattle that does
proton therapy which possibly
could help,” Windie wrote.

Lane stripes are hard to see
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
Anyone who has driven through
Keizer at night in recent months,
especially on River Road North, might
have had some trouble determining
whether they are maintaining the
proper lane.
Here’s the good news: Your eyes
aren’t failing you.
The bad news? It might be a while
before it’s fi xed.
“It’s true that the lines are diffi cult to
see at times, especially if it’s wet,” said
City Manager Chris Eppley during a
“ We’re working on it,
but it’s going to
be a while. Drive
carefully until then.”

City Manager
Keizer City Council meeting Monday,
Feb. 3. “We’re working on it, but it’s
going to be a while. Drive carefully
until then.”
Marion County’s striping vehicle is
offl ine for a major overhaul. Marion
County supplies striping services to
Keizer. Mayor Cathy Clark said she
had heard from residents with similar
complaints on Lockhaven Drive and
Chemawa Road.
As of Monday’s meeting, there were
still questions regarding what exactly
had gone wrong. Public Works Director
Bill Lawyer said his own son was the
fi rst to bring it to his attention.
“I called the county to ask if
anything had changed in the way they

Ready honored for care as volunteer
For the sixth year in a row,
call volumes have increased
for Marion County Fire Dis-
trict #1. The agency respond-
ed to 8,026 calls for help in
2019, a 5.6 percent increase
from 2018.
Overall, call volumes have
increased an average of 5.2
percent per year since 2016.
Overlapping calls for help ac-
count for 55 percent of these
calls, and Fire Chief Kyle Mc-
Mann said that the agency
needs help.
The additional cost would
be $4.67 per month (or $56
per year) for the owner of a
home assessed at $200,000.
The funding request will be
on voter ballots during the
May 19 primary election.

the death suspicious and not
consistent with the evidence
at the scene.
The man was identifi ed
late Tuesday evening as
21-year-old Oscar Martinez
of Salem. An autopsy
performed by the Oregon
State Medical Examiner’s
Offi ce revealed he died of a
gunshot wound.
Keizer police detectives
are continuing to investigate
the incident but do not
believe there is any risk to
the public.
Anyone who witnessed
this incident is asked to

at 503-390-3713.
‘I look at it as I get to say yes’
By MATT RAWLINGS
Of the Keizertimes
If you're at event that has
anything to do with McNary
High School, it's likely that
Tammy Ready will also be in
attendance.
Whether it's working
countless hours at a conces-
sion stand during a McNary
sporting event with her hus-
band, Dave, speaking at the
school's College and Ca-
reer Center or being present
during a new production at
Ken Collins Theater, Ready
loves being there for kids.
“We just love supporting
kids. We loving seeing the
people we know and the peo-
ple's kids we know succeed,
fail, learn and grow. There's
nothing better than that,”
Ready said.
It's because of that mindset,
as well as a multitude of oth-
er reasons, that Ready was the
