DECEMBER 6, 2019, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A1 1 Volcanoes take part in Latin outreach program in 2020 File Rios carries the ball against Sandy in McNary’s jamboree. RIOS, continued from Page A14 Currently, Rios maintains a grade-point-average of 4.18, while taking multiple accelerated placement (AP) classes and being a part of National Honor Society. His plan is to major in psycholo- gy as a part of a pre-law pro- gram, then eventually go to law school after completing his undergrad. “I’m really passionate about law, but psycholo- gy also really interests me because of the study of the human brain and how it works,” Rios said. It can be a chore to main- tain such high academic standing while training, go- ing on recruiting trips and playing multiple sports — Rios is also one of the top athletes on the McNary track team. But despite his busy schedule, Rios fi nds a way to juggle all of his re- sponsibilities effectively. “It can be a lot to manage everything at times, especial- ly with my AP classes. I have to know when I need to do homework and when I need to go the gym and when I need to watch fi lm,” Rios said. “It’s about knowing what I need to get done and knowing when my deadlines are.” Rios is hoping to get an offi cial offer by the time spring rolls around. So during the offseason, he has the goal to prepare himself for the next level — even though he still has another year of high school football to play. “I want to get my body more ready to play college football,” Rios said. “I played at 220 (lbs.), and I want to be 230 for next season. My goal is just to get stronger and faster.” What’s on your HONEY-DO LIST? The Salem-Keizer Volca- noes have been selected by Minor League Baseball as one of 22 teams across the country to join their Copa de la Diversión program be- ginning in the 2020 season. Copa de la Diversión, is a season-long event series specifi cally designed to em- brace the culture and values that resonate most with par- ticipating teams’ local His- panic/Latino communities. After its test run with two teams (Las Vegas and Char- lotte) in 2017, Copa de la Diversión began in earnest in 2018. The program grew in 2019, and is adding 22 additional teams in 2020, in- cluding the Volcanoes. This program is designed to be an organic outreach program with the intent to bridge the gap between the Latinx community, creating a decidedly more inclusive environment in the stadi- um and in the community. Promoting and supporting the Hispanic culture in their ballpark, on specifi c nights, the Volcanoes will adopt a new identity (the Campesi- nos) themed around aspects of the Latino heritage that refl ect both the spirit of the club and the community they represent. Sporting vibrantly col- ored uniforms and new lo- gos, the Campesinos will take the fi eld to Spanish music while fans will en- joy food, games and special guests that celebrate the His- panic culture. The program has already experienced early success for the last two seasons. “The fact that kids are loving the program made it resonate loudly with us,” said Mickey Walker, CEO for the Metro Paint Volcanoes. “We can hardly wait to take the fi eld as the Campesinos next season.” The fi rst night this will take place at Volcanoes Sta- dium will be Sunday, June 21, which is also Father’s Day. Five additional Campesi- nos dates have been selected: July 5, July 26, Aug. 8, Aug. 16 and Sept. 5. About the Campesinos: A tribute to their hard work, Salem-Keizer’s “Campesi- nos” moniker pays tribute to the collective contributions of farm workers toward es- tablishing Oregon as one of the leading agricultural re- gions in the United States. “The Campesinos name, logos, wordmarks and El Campo symbol were devel- oped and selected by mem- bers of our local Hispanic community, including the Latino Business Alliance,” said Mitche Graf, president of business operations for the Volcanoes. “That led us to something that is exciting for our Hispanic fans. I think even our non-Hispanic fans are going to be excited about this. We’ve been working on this since January.” “This will also provide our Latino players the op- portunity to feel more com- fortable and get acclimated quicker to their new sur- roundings. It’s truly a win- win scenario for everyone,” added Walker. Minor League Baseball reported that attendance spiked more than 24 percent on Copa de la Diversión Nights last season. The offi cial on-fi eld uni- forms are in development and will be announced in Spring.
