NOVEMBER 15, 2019, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A9 Getting to know our neighbors Reporter Lauren Murphy has been visiting Keizer’s retirement communities with the purpose of getting to know some of our seniors, the lives they’ve lived and what they are up to now. Randy Conover Ken & Nadine Teshow Before retirement, Ken Telschow served in the Navy for four years and then was a millwright for a sawmill. In his retire- ment he enjoys be- ing a member of the Farifi eld Grange and cooking chicken fried steak at the Keizer / Salem Area Senior Center the third Friday of every month. He has been working with the senior center for about 12 years. He has been married to Nadine for 61 years. His advice to young people is to be enthusi- astic about working and doing a good job. Nadine worked at Safeway and KeyBank before retiring. She and Ken have two children and two grandchildren. They joked about calling their grandchildren when they need help with tech- nology. One of the things she enjoys in her retirment is making quilts for the Liberty House. Before coming to Willamette Lu- theran, she and her husband were campground hosts in Klamath County. They were there during the Biscuit Fire in 2002. Her ad- vice to young people is to plan ahead for the future, specifi cally retirement. Don Adams A conversation with Don Adams can be likened to a game of mental chess. He has a passion for fi nding and writing oth- er people’s stories and has written several books. He met his wife in high school and was married for 45 years. He had a production company in Hollywood but walked away because he didn’t want his kids to run into the wild life of Hollywood stars. “If you go from Beverly Hills to Scotts Mills, you’re crazy,” he said, which is exactly what he did. Randy Conover has lived on and off at the Oaks at Sherwood since 1997 and is the president of the residents council. He was in an accident in 1996 which made him real- ize that when life gets hard you can make good choices and bad choices. Conover wants to foster a stronger connection between the community and the recovery home, he encour- aged the community to come visit and spend time with resi- dents. Zoe, his dog, spends her days at the home meeting and loving the residents and her nights with a family. His advice to young people is to go out and make every- day good for you and good for somebody else. Jeffrey Stevens Words and pictures by Lauren Murphy Jeffrey Stevens has worn many hats during the course of his life, he was: a member of the Stylistics, a worker at Intel and Hewlett-Packard, a husband and a father of seven chil- dren. He’s not done yet. His stay at the Oaks at Sherwood is temporary, after he recovers from his upcoming surgery he plans to get back to enjoying life. Stevens has plans to record his songbook within the next year and continue to attend all the musical festivals he can. He said he enjoys playing music with Tom Grant. ASK MR. TRASH Q. Forum on student success at MHS Salem-Keizer Public Schools are slated to receive more than $35 million from the Student Success Act. The Student Investment Account can only be used to meet stu- dents’ mental or behavioral health needs, and increase ac- ademic achievement for stu- dents while reducing academic disparities. Next week, the district will go out to the communi- ty through community forums and focus groups to gather more feedback about how to invest funds in the student in- vestment account. The com- munity forums will be held in Keizer at McNary High on Nov. 18 and in Salem on Nov. 20 at South Salem High. Both meetings take place from 6-8 p.m. Free dinner and childcare will be provided. The district convened a Student Investment Account Task Force in September, and the group wrapped up its ini- tial phase of work sessions on October 28. Made up of almost 40 members of the community and employees from across the district, the work group honed its focus on specifi c communi- ty teams to address the needs of students who are economically disadvantaged, Native Ameri- can, English learners, black or African American, experienc- ing homelessness, Native Ha- waiian or Pacifi c Islanders and receiving special education services. The task force will take the information gathered to make its fi nal recommenda- tion to Superintendent Perry in January.
