PAGE A8, KEIZERTIMES, OCTOBER 4, 2019 CELTICS, continued from Page A12 wide open on a broken play up the sideline, and the senior receiver cut back upfi eld and went past a pair of McNary defenders to reach the goal line for the score. The Bruins regained pos- session after a quick three- and-out from McNary and wasted no time moving the ball, using their physical rush- ing attack to get into McNary territory. “Instead of messing around so much with their downfi eld vertical passing game, (Bar- low) decided to be physical and run the football,” Auvin- en said. “That didn’t mix very well with us being fatigued and I think they smelled blood in the water. They real- ly ran the football well in the second half and we didn’t rise up. We just kind of sat back and took it. We didn’t match their physicality.” A 10-yard run from Bar- low running back Jake Fay gave the Bruins their fi rst lead of the game at 14-9 with 5:21 left in the third quarter. McNary got back in busi- ness when Barker found Nunez across the middle for a big gain into Barlow territory. However, the Barlow de- fense rose up with a big sack moments later to force Mc- Nary into a fourth-and-18 situation. In no-man’s-land at the Barlow 32-yard line, the Celtics decided to go for it. On the ensuing play, Bark- er bought himself time and connected with McNary running back Junior Walling in the corner of the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown, but a holding call negated the score and pushed the ball back 10 yards. With it being fourth-and-28, Mc- Nary elected to punt. “We had a lot of mis- takes. Plays were there to be made and we didn’t make them,” Auvinen said. “Our defense played their butt off tonight, and our offense gave us a chance early, but if they would have put the pressure on, it would have been a to- tally different game.” Midway through the fourth quarter, McNary had a chance to take the lead once again. A pair of fi rst down runs from Barker had the Celtics inside the Barlow 20-yard line. On third-and-one, Bark- er had his number called once again on a quarterback draw, but this time the Barlow de- fense stuffed him with a two- yard loss. Facing fourth-and-three, Barker sprinted to his right looking to throw to the end zone. But his pass intended for Noah Lelack was knocked down and the Celtics were forced to turn the ball over on downs with 5:41 remain- ing. The Bruins ripped off three chunk plays in a row to fi nd themselves in the red zone. Eventually, Hunter scored on a one-yard quarter- back sneak to put the game on ice with less than three minutes remaining. “I want to commend the kids. They played hard and they played physical. We just kind of lost it the last quar- ter,” Auvinen said. “We’re still a work in progress, but the good thing is that we are see- ing strides.” McNary will strive for their fi rst win of the season on Friday, Oct. 4 as they trav- el to South Medford for their fi nal non-conference game of the season. Whiteaker picks up fi rst win Behind 151 rush yards and two touchdowns from Marquis Jackson, the White- aker varsity football got their fi rst win of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 25, beating Crossler 29-8. Kevin Munguia took the second half kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and Tony Bravo connected on a TD pass to Keenan Chase to round out the scoring for the Wolverines. The Whiteaker defense dominated through- out, allowing Crossler to score just once late in the fourth quarter. The Wolverine defense was led by Jackson’s 12 tack- les, along with seven tackles from Desmond Tejeda and six from Andrew Zeller. Head coach Tom Larim- er credited his defensive line (Darius Afalava, Justin Larios, Andres Hermosillo Vega and Alex Nava) for much of the success. “After getting roughed up last week, these guys really worked hard to be more dis- ciplined in their assignments and to play much more physical today,” said Larimer. “This is a great win for us; most of our kids have played very little or no football be- fore, whereas Crossler is full of kids who have played for years in their youth football league. Our kids learned that hard work and disci- pline could pay off against a far more experienced oppo- nent.” Whiteaker did not turn the ball over and committed only two penalties, after be- ing plagued by turnovers and penalties in its opening loss at Parrish. We have a long way to go to be a really good team, but today we played a really, really good game.” Next up is a home game on Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Leslie. “Leslie is another team with a lot of experience, and it will be a good test to see if we can hold our own,” said Larimer.
