PAGE A8, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Celts blanked by Lake Oswego in home opener FBALL By MATT RAWLINGS Of the Keizertimes Before the season started, McNary head coach Miguel Camarena was vocal about the desire he has for his team to be a better goal-scoring squad. It appears that the Celtics still have a lot of room for growth in that department. Despite numerous oppor- tunities, McNary couldn’t put one into the back of the net as they fell to Lake Oswego 1-0 in their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 5. Lakers forward Aaron Rudder put away a penalty kick in the 30th minute for the game’s only score. “For the second game of the season, I though the boys had a good performance. But it was disappointing that we couldn’t fi nish,” Camarena said. “We came out a little fl at in the fi rst half.” After not a lot of action in the fi rst 20 minutes, McNary had a few different threats af- ter the midway point of the fi rst half. Eddie Martinez tried to hit Edgar Salazar cutting to- wards the net with a beau- tiful touch pass from the midfi eld, but Lake Oswego goalkeeper Johann Shahala- mi made a great read and left his box early to beat Salazar to the ball. Shahalami would make two additional saves in the following three minutes to turn McNary away. In the 30th minute, Lake Oswego had a throw-in deep in Celtic territory. Instead, the ball inci- dentally glanced off Brunk’s hand, which led to the Lak- ers being awarded a penalty kick. Lake Oswego capitalized on the error as McNary keeper Alejandro Villarreal couldn’t get a hand on Rud- der’s shot that punished the back of the net. Even though he was beat on the penalty kick, Villarre- al’s efforts in the net kept the Celtics in the game all night. Rudder had a chance to give his team a 2-0 lead be- fore the end of the fi rst half as he got behind the Mc- Nary back line for an open shot, but Villarreal was able to knock the ball away to keep the defi cit at one. Villarreal continued this trend in the second half as well, knocking away multiple Lake Oswego shot attempts from point blank range. “Without a doubt, I think (Villarreal) is the best goal- keeper in the conference,” Camarena said. “He’s a col- lege-material goalkeeper and he’s going to help us big- time this year.” The Celtics best opportu- continued from Page A12 KEIZERTIMES/Matt Rawlings McNary’s Jack Baez looks to get past a Lake Oswego defender in the Celtics 1-0 loss on Thursday, Sept. 5. nity to break even came in the 55th minute when Eli Petilo got loose on a break- away and had a one-on-one opportunity with Shahalami in the box. Petilo aimed for the left- side of the goal, but Shahala- mi was able to get a hand up to block the shot and even kept Salazar from corralling the rebound. While losing a game like this one would be tough for any team, Camarena hopes that the high competitive level of this early-season matchup will better prepare his team for what they will face during Mountain Valley Conference play. “I think it will help us im- prove mentally,” Camarena said. “We’re going to work to fi x our mistakes and come back a better team.” McNary returns to this Flesher Field on Thursday, Sept. 19 to take on Madison at 7:30 p.m. air. Offensively, McNary was able to rack up just over 300 yards of total offense, but the Black Tornado still only man- aged the Celtics to one score. “We actually moved the ball pretty well at times, we just couldn’t fi nish off drives,” Auvinen said. McNary will be chal- lenged once again in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 13 when they take on West Linn, a team that is projected to contend for a state title. It will be a different match- up for this Celtics squad than it was against North Med- ford. The Black Tornado take pride in being physical in the trenches while West Linn is a team that spreads the fi eld and has the majority of their offense revolving around the passing game. Auvinen believes McNary will be able to compete bet- ter in this contest, but he also wants his team to not bring the frustrations of their fi rst defeat into their battle with West Linn. “It will be a different game. I think that we match up well with them at some positions. We just need to try and fl ush our last game and move for- ward,” Auvinen said s a t u rd ay, s e p t e m b e r 2 1 Craft and Fair Book Sale 8 am to 4 pm in the auditorium 1776 Country Club Rd Sam Goesch CLU, Agent (503) 885 -7800 “Easy Online Arrangements” CrownMemorialBurial.com Privately Owned Cremation Facility Family Owned – Family Focused Sam Goesch Ins Agcy Inc 3975 River Road North Keizer, OR 97303 Web: SamGoesch.com Bus: 503-393-6252 1211999 State Farm , Bloomington, IL crossword creative help wanted Part-Time Graphic Designer — Keizer On behalf of our sister newspaper (Malheur Enterprise), Keizertimes is seeking an entry-level graphic designer to join the team in our Keizer offi ce.
