SEPTEMBER 6, 2019, KEIZERTIMES FOOTBALL PREVIEW, PAGE B11 could also be key ball-carriers in North Salem’s double- wing system. Another adjustment North Salem will have to make this season is at the quarterback position. Zac Sullivan has been the signal-caller for the Vikings the last two seasons and earned an honorable mention in 2018. Before he took over the role, Sullivan’s brother, Hunter, was the Vikings quarterback from 2015 to 2016. Justin Montero, a senior, will step into the starting quarterback role this fall for North Salem, and according to Flood, has some major potential and will also be a threat in North Salem’s rushing attack. “Justin is a real talent. It will be a transition, but he’s extremely athletic, and I’m excited to see what he can do on the fi eld,” Flood said. “He’s a fantastic runner. I think we would be wasting him a little bit if we didn’t let him use his legs.” This 2019 North Salem team will also feature new players on the perimeter. After losing their top pass- catcher in Cris Davis last year, junior receiver Clayton Hinton-Welty looks to be Montero’s top target heading into this season. Hinton- Welty was the backup quarterback last year and brings a high football I.Q. to the receiver position. “He’s got great hands and great instincts. He’s a big, physical kid out there who really knows football,” Flood said. Elesban Almonte and tight end Isaiah Rico will also be greatly involved in the Vikings passing attack. It’s most likely unrealistic for North Salem to compete for a playoff spot in the 2019 — the Vikings haven’t had a winning season since 2004. But even with the roster turnover, Flood believes that his kids will be able to stay in contention in the majority of their games. “I think this team has a chance to be competitive, it’s just going to be about how we fi ll in the gaps we have,” Flood said. “I was really pleased with how we competed last year. We were in most games in the fi rst two to three quarters, we just couldn’t hang some of those times. It’s going to be a matter of these kids being in shape and being able to play a full four quarters.” North Salem roster # PLAYER NAME YR. POS. HT. WT. # PLAYER NAME YR. POS. HT.
