The event had 27 ven- dors, which event coordinator Mike White is hoping only scratches the surface of what is to come. There were awards from fi rst through ninth place in pork, brisket, ribs, and chick- en. A grand champion, reserve grand champion and the Ore- gon steak champion were also crowned. Winners included Grand Champion: Mad- dog’s BBQ. Reserve Grand Champion: Smoaking Timbers. Oregon Steak Champion- ship- Verl Green. 1st Place Pork: Fowl Cookin’ at the lake house BBQ. 1st Place Brisket: Maddog’s BBQ. 1st Place Ribs: J & C BBQ. 1st Place Chicken: Fowl Cookin’. A B C The Keizertimes was hon- ored with 11 awards includ- ing three fi rst place prizes at the annual Better Newspaper Contest held at the annual Oregon Newspaper Publish- ers Association convention last week. Managing editor Eric A. Howald won a fi rst place award for best local column (Where are the adults? about covering student protests in the wake of a mass shooting at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fl.). Former Associate News Editor Derek Wiley won fi rst place for best sports photo (Celtics knocked out in fi rst round of 6A state playoffs). Matt Rawlings, who suc- ceeded Wiley, won fi rst place for best spot news coverage (Life saver, the story of a Keiz- er man who saved a woman whose car had left the road and landed in an orchard). The Keizertimes won sec- ond place awards for its Sa- lem-Keizer High School Football Preview (best special section). Casey Chaffi n won second place in best feature story, personality, for Making it work as a team, her profi le of Peggy and Jerry Moore, a Keizer couple who were in- strumental in in taking the Rickman Community Gar- den to the next level. Third place awards were won for: coverage of business issues, education coverage, sports story and writing, all won by Howald. Matt Raw- lings took third place for ed- ucational coverage. Candace Johnson was honored for her graphics work on a foster care story. The staff of the paper was honored for their photo essay of the 2018 KeizerFEST in review. Lyndon Zaitz, publisher of the Keizertimes, was installed as the 83rd president of the Or- egon Newspaper Publishers Association last week at the group’s annual convention. Zaitz, publisher since 2007, has been a member of the board of directors for the publishers association for four terms over 10 years. As he took the gavel at his installation at the Salishan Re- sort near Lincoln City, Zaitz said, “(The association’s) mem- ber’s missions remain the same: covering the local news, telling the stories of our communities and being the public’s watch- dog on government. As long as we do it correctly we will be rewarded with readership.” In his remarks, Zaitz ac- knowledged the industry lead- ers who preceded him as pres- ident and thanked Les Zaitz, his brother and publishing mentor.
