SKPS board elects new offi cers, students decry ICE, health care efforts BY HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes Marty Heyen was elected chairperson of the Salem-Keizer School Board and Jesse Lippold vice chairperson on Tuesday, July 16 at the board’s annual organizational meeting. “I am grateful for this opportunity to serve our school board directors,” Heyen said. “I look forward to working together to provide the best possible outcomes for our students and our families.” Both were elected without opposition. Heyen, who had just been re-elected by school district voters, took the oath of of- fi ce as a board member, administered by Paul Dakopolos, district counsel. Dakopolos also swore in newly elected members Satya Chandragiri and Danielle Bethel. In other business, the board proclaimed July 15-19 as Summer Meals Week, high- lighting the summer meals program and the outcomes for students who access the means and programs that accompany them. The board also approved the Healthy and Safe Schools Plan recently required of all school districts in Oregon by the Legisla- ture. The plan involves standards, not only for schools, but also for all buildings owned and leased by the Salem-Keizer School Dis- trict (SKSD). Michael Wolfe, chief operating offi cer of the district, will administer the plan. Dakopolos was appointed district coun- sel for 2019-20 school year. The one direc- tor voting against the appointment was Paul Kyllo, who had voted the same way a year ago, saying the board should have put out bids for the service. Early in the meeting, a succession of stu- dents and recent graduates from the SKSD spoke from the fl oor on their concerns about the local presence of the federal Im- migrations and Customs Enforcement and problems with healthcare in the schools. Superintendent Christy Perry acknowl- edged that district offi cials had no say in the matter and reminded them that state offi cials do not assist ICE. Personnel actions approved by the board included the following in the Keizer atten- dance area: • Temporary full-time status: John Man- gan and Robert Robison, McNary; Hol- ly Smucker, Kennedy Elementary School; Allison Wilson, Claggett Creek Middle School. • First-year probation part-time: Deaven Schmidt, Kennedy. • First-year probation full-time: Gabriela Tellez Osomo, Tyler Lalack, McNary. • Second-year probation full-time: Sara Hankins, Claggett Creek; Corie McPursi- full, McNary. • Contract full-time: Ashley Swanick, Kennedy. • Resignations: Bradley Emmert, Eliza- beth Gibson, Marrla Wilkerson, McNary; Stephanie Rabago, Claggett Creek. After the regular meeting, the board met in executive session on labor negotiations.
