JUNE 21, 2019, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A9 Dragon’s Hoard discovers secret to book club longevity By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes Book clubs often start with the best of intentions, but reali- ty soon sets in. Sooner or later, a challeng- ing or controversial book is “assigned” for the group read and discussions devolve into bitterness that spills over into personal interactions. Keizerite Gretchen McKane and friend Tara Caton fi gured out a different, more lasting, formula. “What we didn’t want was a club where we assigned books and then everyone got togeth- er to rip it apart,” McKane said. “There’s no homework and we’re not in grade school any- more, we get together and talk about the things that excite us.” What excites the Drag- on’s Hoard Book Club, which meets almost monthly in Keiz- er, is science fi ction and fantasy. The group fi rst began meeting on September 2016 and is still going strong. Members are still welcome to vent about the books that don’t speak to them as readers, but the club is mostly about sharing passions. “We get together and talk about what we’re reading, dif- ferent authors and if there’s been movies or TV series made Dragon’s Hoard recommends Each month Dragon’s Hoard Book Club adds to a long list of recom- mendation from club members. Here are some of the group’s more off-the-beaten path author suggestions in science fi ction and fantasy: Amy Cissell Ted Dekker Maria Goodin Kevin Hearne Jean Johnson Marco Kloos Nalini Singh Michael Stackpole Brent Weeks Timothy Zahn out of them those are fair game, too,” McKane said. In addition to book talk, Dragon’s Hoard members make fi eld trips to bookstores in Portland and other near-fl ung The members of the Drag- on’s Hoard. In April, Portland author Amy Cissell visited. In May, Se- attle-area author Jean Johnson stopped by. “I really like the energy and enthusiasm everyone has for all their favorite things,” Johnson wrote to the club after the vis- it. She said the goal of bring- ing an enthusiasm to the rest of the club was preferable to the homework assignments of other groups. Johnson’s military science fi ction debut began with A Soldier’s Duty, part of the series Theirs Not to Reason Why, but she’s written a throng of other titles and in other genres. McKane said the outreach to area authors is something new for the club and she hopes to fi nd others interested in joining the Hoard for a meeting. Another thing that makes Dragon’s Hoard unique is that members take minutes of ev- ery meeting. That might sound like a chore, but it’s yielded a growing resource for everyone involved. While there are the run-of-the-mill things found in meeting notes, there are now nine full pages of reading and viewing recommendations, sources for fi nding new authors and books, video and tabletop game recommendations that draw on themes the club en- joys, and even fan fi ction picks. The minutes alone are their own treasure trove. I&E Construction is redeveloping this former farmland into a residential community. The pesticide dieldrin was found in shallow soil on the property at concentrations above DEQ’s residential and urban residential risk levels of 0.034 and 0.085 milligrams per kilogram, respectively, and required clean up. DEQ approved a fi nal remedial action in November 2017 to clean up the dieldrin contamination in the soil. The remedial action included removal of soil above residential and urban residential risk prior to developing the site. The remedial action was completed on the west property in September 2018. I&E Construction has requested a No Further Action Determination from DEQ for this portion of the site. The No Further Action will enable multi- and single-family home construction to begin on this part of the property, which includes all of Tax Lot 800 and the western third of Tax Lot 900. DEQ has also issued a fact sheet to update the neighbors and the community on the No Further Action Determination. I read The Hobbit 20 times before we started the club and I haven’t read it in a long time because of the club and the list we’ve generated. The club makes me read more and new authors and styles of writing,” McKane said.
