MAY 17, 2019, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A11 Schools move forward with $47 million more BY HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes A $47,323,709 increase in the current Salem-Keizer Public Schools budget was approved by the School Board on Tuesday. That is the increase in grant revenues over the amount an- ticipated for the 2018-19 school year. It includes three grants approved Tuesday: $8 million from the Oregon Department of Education for capital improvements to include an addition and renovations at McKay High School; $288,611 from ODE for programs for migrant children; and $5,000 from the Oregon Tech Foundation for teachers participating in workshops for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pro- grams. In other business, the board approved for fi rst reading a per- manent easement to the city of Keizer for an area in the north- western part of the McNary High School campus, to operate the public drinking water well and pump station in that area. Also approved for fi rst reading were authorization of a prop- erty tax exemption for fi ve apartment complexes in Salem, and support of a regional continuum of care to reduce homelessness in the mid-Willamette valley. The board approved the application from Qurat “Anna” Ali of Salem for a term on the Willamette Education Service Dis- trict board of directors. Personnel actions approved by the board included the follow- ing in the McNary attendance area: • Temporary full-time contracts for Michael Etzel, Claggett Creek Middle School; Mary Kruger, Kennedy Elementary School; and Brian VanWyngarden, Keizer Elementary School. • First-year probation full-time contracts for Kelly Burdick and Jason Harris, McNary; and Sara Ricketts, Weddle Elemen- tary School. • Resignations of Kimberly Hanson, Cummings Elementary School; Michelle Merritt, Weddle Elementary School; and Su- sanne Stefani and Heather Zehr, McNary. Keizer Community Band performs at MHS May 29 The public is invited to a free concert by the Keiz- er Community Band on Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the McNary High School auditorium. Teacher seeks cure for ‘chronic stupidity’ in Pentacle’s Neil Simon production Pentacle Theatre will stage the comedy Fools by Neil Simon starting on Friday, May 24 at the Pentacle Theatre, 324 52nd Avenue N.W. Fools is a play about Leon Tolchinsky who lands a teaching job in a small town, but begins to discover that the town has suffered from chronic stupidity for 200 years, and its his job to break the curse. The play is suitable for middle school aged audiences and older. Showtimes are on Wednesdays, Thurs- days, and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and on Sun- days at 2 p.m. through June 15.
