For me, it has always been fi shing. I en- joy my work but it is a way to a means. It all started when I caught my fi rst fi sh on a fl y when I was 4 years old. I don’t remem- ber much as a four-year old but I remember that fi sh. By my eighth year, I was always count- ing the days to the next fi shing trip. I would spend my time reading Field and Stream or Outdoor Life, gleaning all I could about an- gling and faraway rivers and lakes I could hardly imagine ever going to. There was always time to walk down to Claggett or Labish creeks to catch a cut- throat. One-day trips to the Little North Fork or Santiam Rivers with my parents and younger brother. These trips were great but the week long vacations spent on the Up- of the Week presented by BRYAN HERNANDEZ Senior at McNary High School Sprinter -Track & Field Hernandez won both the 100 and 200 meter races at McNary’s dual meet with McKay on Wednesday, April 24, and set personal-best times in both events. The occasion- al weekends spent on the Metolius Riv- er were special and became my favorite river to fi sh. All these ve n t u r e s as a boy led to my passion for fl y fi shing. As I grew older, I pro- gressed from want to catch lots of fi sh to wanting to catch a big, diffi cult fi sh. This journey has taken me from casting to ris- ing trout to swinging fl ies for steelhead and salmon. It is said that a steelhead is a fi sh of a thousand casts. The tug is the drug and I’m addicted. Cast. Mend the line. Let the fl y swing across, take two steps down and do it again. Some feel this boring and futile. The wonderment of the river and surroundings that make it all possible is both exhilarat- ing and cathartic. So this is my passion. A pas- sion of serenity and rhythm. The peace of the surround- ings and the motion of the cast. Of being one with the river and all it shares with me. The river is like life, always changing, never the same. It has been a long jour- ney from when I caught that fi rst trout when I was 4 years old. The journey is what should be appreciated and learned from. In the follow- ing months, I hope to share some of my journey through my fi shing life — good and bad, cold and warm, wet and dry. If you have a true passion, it doesn’t matter.
