Drive 4 McNary School board approves WMS traffi c change Saturday By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes A right of way along the front of Whiteaker Middle School to ease Keizer traffi c received the support of the Salem-Keizer School Board on Tuesday night. It is part of Keizer’s Trans- portation Systems Plan for a right turn lane for westbound traffi c on Lockhaven Drive and will not reduce parking spaces or access to Lockhaven. The city of Keizer will pay all costs and assume responsibility for maintenance and upkeep. In other business, the board approved purchasing Auburn Park in Salem to support the expansion of Auburn Elemen- tary School. The appraised value is $360,000, and the dis- trict will pay up to $15,000 in additional appraisals that Mar- ion County will need to fi nd replacement park lands. The board named Anice- to Jay Taisacan Mundo and Leanette Mabinton to the Community Bond Oversight Committee. Other members include Nigel Guisinger, trea- surer of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce. The board approved three grants: $256,887 from the Oregon Department of Ed- ucation for professional de- velopment opportunities for classifi ed and licensed staff, $243,174 from ODE for as- sisting English language learn- ers and $50,985 from Early Learning Hub, Inc., to aid nine more preschool students at Hayesville Elementary School. The Spotlight on Success portion of the meeting rec- ognized the culinary programs at McNary, North Salem, and South Salem high schools for their achievements at last month’s Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association Pro- Start Invitation in Salem. Chef Wendy Bennett’s team from McNary won second place in the culinary compe- tition. The menu included a fresh Oregon-inspired salad roll, sesame-crusted steelhead and coconut sticky rice pud- ding. Irina Bakun, McNary’s chef mentor, won the ProS- tart Mentor of the Year award, and McNary students earned $18,250 each in scholarships from culinary schools across the United States. Personnel actions approved by the board included sec- ond-year probation part-time status for Julio Cuellar at Mc- Nary. The board designated May 6-10 as Teacher Appreciation Week. McNary High School will host its Drive 4 UR School fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the McNary parking lot. The community is invited to test drive Skyline Ford ve- hicles such as the Ford Mus- tang and the F-150. There is no purchase necessary, and each vehicle driven will pro- vide $20 for McNary High School students. Participants who test drive the Ford Edge will provide $30. The McNary leadership decided to have the fundraiser at the McNary parking lot to make it more accessible to the community, and the goal is to raise $4,000.
