BAGE A4, KEIZERTIMES, DECEMBER 21, 2018 Rickman Garden may get new name By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes Peggy Moore was de- termined to get the Keiz- er Parks Advisory Board to scuttle an effort to rename the Rickman Communi- ty Garden after her and her husband, Jerry. After telling the board how much she and Jerry enjoyed making sure people are fed and teaching others about gardening, the reviews of her performance were un- forgiving. “You’re doing a really bad job of talking us out of it, but that’s why we all want to see it happen,” said Matt Lawyer, who nominated the couple for their years of involvement at the garden. “We just don’t want peo- ple to think we are taking ownership of it,” said Peggy in a last-ditch effort to knock the train off the track. Parks board members were unswayed and forward- ed a recommendation to the Keizer City Council to re- name Rickman Communi- ty Garden to the Peggy and Jerry Moore Community Garden. To say the least, the Moores’ efforts at the garden have not gone unnoticed. The couple were some of the earliest gardeners at Rick- man even before they took over as directors. Since taking over, garden im- provements hav- en’t stopped. Jer- ry has built raised beds for some of the elderly gar- deners, the cou- ple fundraised for and enlisted volunteers to put a fence around the garden to keep out pesky neighbors, and the latest project is the installation of solar panels on a shed that will power heaters for a donated green- house year-round. Within the garden, the Moores secured donations of soil and additives to create garden mixes for every plot, turned donated wine barrels into community herb gar- dens for all the gardens users and erected several commu- nity planters for items that would otherwise take up too much space in individual plots. In addition to supplying fresh produce for the gar- den’s immediate commu- nity, the Moores and other gardeners at Rickman have donated surplus food to local charitable organizations such The Rickman Community Garden, behind the Keizer Civic Center, may soon be re- named after its current direc- tors, Beggy and Jerry Moore. as Simonka Place and Mari- on-Polk Food Share. Despite all that effort, Peggy described the contri- butions as “a guilty pleasure.” The pleas to avert the ac- tion did not fall on deaf ears, “There are opportuni- ties where the city can say ‘thanks’ and it can be un- comfortable, but this is to in- spire the next generation to pick up your mantle as much as it is to honor your effort,” Lawyer said. but almost everyone said the couple was as deserving as anyone. The Moores were cited for their leadership, dedication, and for the eye-catching na- ture of the garden since they became its directors.
