Today in History At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacifi c fl eet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II. — December 7, 1941 Food 4 Thought “We don’t want an America that is closed to the world. What we want is a world that is open to America.” George H. W. Bush, 41st U.S. President (1924-2018) A 55-year-old Salem man was struck and killed while crossing River Road North near the Cummings Lane North intersection Friday, Nov. 30. Preliminary investigations found Daniel Kelley Tibbot, of Salem, was crossing in a marked crosswalk about 12:45 p.m. when he was struck by a 2009 Ford F-150 driven by Chester Clark, 79, of Keizer. Clark had been traveling eastbound on Cummings Lane and was making a left turn north onto River Road. It appeared Tibbot had a walk signal and the right-of-way when he was hit by the truck, Keizer police officials said. A crew from Keizer Fire District transported Tibbot to Salem Health where he died of his injuries. Clark remained on the scene and cooperated with police in the investiga- tion. With the assistance of the Keizer Public Works Depart- ment both northbound lanes of River Road were closed from Manbrin Drive North to Dietz Avenue NE.
