PAGE A2, KEIZERTIMES, NOVEMBER 16, 2018 Willamette Lutheran salutes its veterans FUNfacts OREGON’S STATE FLAG IS THE ONLY ONE WITH DIFFERENT DESIGNS ON EACH SIDE. PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN TUCKED IMPORTANT PAPERS INSIDE HIS TOP HAT. THERE IS A RABBIT SITTING OVER A POT IN THE MOON AS WELL AS A MAN. OREGON IS HOME TO THE LARGEST LIVING ORGANISM ON EARTH – A HONEY FUNGUS IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS THAT IS 2.4 MILES FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER. IT IS GROWING MOSTLY UNDERGROUND AND MAY BE ALMOST 9,000 YEARS OLD. A DIME HAS 118 RIDGES AROUND THE EDGE. Stan’s last soapbox Hey there True Believers, You might have heard some sad news about me recent- ly. You’ll probably have heard even more about all the things I created years ago that you still en- joy. I want you to know that I’m okay. I got to help create, with artists too numerous to name, an entire universe that will live on in comics, games, cartoons and movies. It was a good run, but I wanted you to hear something from me before we say goodbye. I created a lot of heroes in my lifetime, they fought evildo- ers across dimensions with fi sts and teamwork, but that was just what I had to do to get your attention. It’s what I wrote about that you should remember: Any power comes with re- sponsibility (Spider-Man). Be as smart as you can in whatever you do (Iron Man). What do you call a boomerang that goes away and never comes back? Love your family of choice as fi ercely as you love your mom and dad (Fantastic Four). Use your power and your smarts and your love to help others, even when they don’t look like you (X-Men and Black Panther). That gods, too, are imperfect (Thor). And even monsters may have a heart of gold (Hulk). All of us, even heroes, are given a short time on this plan- et. But heroes of all shapes and sizes are kept alive in the hearts and minds of the people they inspired long after they depart. Heroism starts with kindness. If you see an ant on the ground, step around it. If you see some- one fall, help them up. If you see someone who is lonely, ask them about their day. We need heroes now as much as we ever did in the days before Pe- ter Parker and Tony Stark. I’m counting on you to carry my message forward. Starting today, I want you to live heroically.
