Oregon’s statewide unemployment rate was 3.8 percent in August, essentially unchanged from its revised rate in July of 3.9 percent. Salem’s August employment gains were smaller than nor- mal. Salem gained an estimated 1,600 jobs in August when an increase of roughly 1,700 would be expected, meaning seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment decreased 100. The pub- lic sector shed 1,300 jobs, de- clining 3.3 percent.
