PAGE B2, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 McNary gets fi rst league win KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary senior Katy Wyatt fi ghts for the ball last week against Lake Oswego. Lady Celts end preseason 2-5 By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Sometimes a soccer goal looks as large as the ocean but other times as small as the eye of a needle. Unfortunately for the Mc- Nary (2-5) girls soccer team, it’s been the latter, as the Lady Celts fell to Lake Oswego 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 13. The shutout was the fourth in a row for McNary, which last scored a goal on Aug. 30 against Forest Grove. “A lot of it has to do with the teams we’re playing and then a portion of it has to do with just confi dence with the ball at our feet,” McNary head coach A.J. Nash said. The Lady Celts played Lake Oswego without last season’s leading scorer, as Ab- bie Hawley suffered a concus- sion in a 3-0 loss at Sheldon on Tuesday. McNary is also missing starting central de- fender Samantha Alfano. “When you lose a key player it forces you to play differently and confi dence is the biggest thing that’s lost,” Nash said. “Right now the best thing that I can take from today is that we had our confi dence back with Gina (Munguia) in the sweeper position, which is why we had more attack- ing opportunities than we’ve seen in the past two games. We played another great squad from Portland and put up a good fi ght without our top defender and our top goal scorer.” The Lady Celts did fi nd a new formation, switching to a 4-5-1 to attack more through the midfi eld than through their forwards. “It provides a little bit more security for the defense,” Nash said. “It has the appearance that we’re being more defen- sive but we’re just able to at- tack a little bit more danger- ously because any number of fi ve players can attack through the midfi eld.” Lake Oswego scored its fi rst goal late in the fi rst half and then added a penalty kick midway through the second after McNary was called for a push in the box. “It was an extremely large shift from the offi ciat- ing we’ve got in the fi rst fi ve games,” Nash said. “Our team just didn’t adjust to the call- ing.” McNary opens Mountain Valley Conference play at West Salem on Tuesday, Sept. 25. By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary volleyball earned its fi rst Mountain Valley Con- ference win on Monday, Sept. 17, sweeping South Salem 3-0 at home. “We just fought really hard today and it was a good win,” McNary junior Zoie Warner. “We defi nitely fault really hard for this. Our energy was really high tonight.” After winning the fi rst game 25-18, the Lady Celts fell be- hind late in the second before rallying to go on a 7-0 run to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead. “They gathered themselves back together and went back to our game plan,” McNary head coach Crystal DeMello said. “You can’t ask for more than that when they stay disciplined and technique comes back into play. It really is coming through FIRE, continued from Page B1 With starting goalkeeper Sebastian Lopez dealing with a hamstring injury, Alejandro Villarreal came off the bench to allow just one goal in a 2-1 win over Madison on Sept. 13 and shut out Gresham. The girls are getting better and better.” McNary was led by its serv- ing against South Salem. “The strongest thing was offensively the girls executed what we wanted to with serv- ing, which was able to put us in the right spots for offensive movement,” DeMello said. McNary’s next home match is Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. against Bend. “It’s my job as a sub to just fi ll in his shoes and keep the team with a clean sheet and do my best to just keep the ball out of the net,” said Vil- larreal, who had seven saves against Gresham. “It’s just focus but I have the support of my team. I sup- port them and they support me and we just keep each oth- er going. It’s whatever I can do to help this team win.” Camarena expects Lopez as well as senior midfi elder Jo- vanie Bravo, who missed the Gresham match with a knee injury, back for West Salem. “The kids are playing well,” Camarena said. “We can compete against anyone.” We are Everything Except Overpriced Simple Cremation $875 Inexpensive Burial and Funeral Options Pre-Planning Available On-Site Crematory 4365 RIVER RD N, KEIZER 503.393.7037 Se habla español Don’t Lose Money from a ZILLOW Zestimate estimate Call or Text 503-983-4086 PUT MY , KNOWLEDGE, SERVICE AND TO WO R K F O R YO U .
