The cities were buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud. In the 18th century, Pompeii and Herculaneum were rediscovered and excavated, providing an unprecedented archaeological record of the everyday life of an ancient civilization, startlingly preserved in sudden death. — August 24, 79 C.E. Volcanoes fall to Hillsboro By HERB SWETT Of the Keizertimes The Volcanoes never over- came a 5-0 early Hillsboro lead in the opening game of a home series and came out on the short end of a 6-4 score on Friday, Aug. 17. Miguel Figueroa, Salem- Keizer’s starting pitcher, got through the fi rst inning with one baserunner who didn’t get past fi rst base, but the Hops scored two runs off him in the second inning and three in the third. He became the losing pitcher with a 1-4 record. In the top of the second, Joey Rose led off with a single to left fi eld, and Francis Marti- nez drove him in with a dou- ble to center. A passed ball by catcher Joey Bart moved him to third, and a ground out by Dan Swain scored Martinez. Jake McCarthy led off the Hillsboro third with a double to right center. Walks to Jorge Perez and LT Tolbert loaded the bases. An errant throw by fi rst baseman Robinson Medrano allowed McCarthy to score. Rose, on a 3-2 count, hit a sacrifi ce fl y to center that scored Perez. Tol- bert got home on an infi eld single by Martinez. With still only one out, JJ Santa Cruz replaced Figueroa on the mound and retired the side on a double play. The fi rst Volcano run came in the bottom of the third. Jett Manning doubled to right center, and Kyle McPherson brought him home with a double to center. In the Volcano fourth, Da- vid Villar led off with a double to right center. Aaron Bond singled to right, moving Vil- lar to third. A wild pitch from Hops starter Ryan Weiss put Bond on second. Nick Hill drove Villar in by grounding out. Manning drove Bond in with a single to right center. Kenny Hernandez relieved Weiss and got one more out to retire the side. Hillsboro added a run in the fi fth. Perez led off with a walk. Tolbert and Andy Yerzy reached fi rst on force outs. Rose doubled down the right fi eld line, moving Yerzy to third. Martinez scored Yerzy with a infi eld single. In the Volcano fi fth, Bart hit a bases-empty home run over the right fi eld fence. Pitching took over the rest of the way. Matt Fris- bee pitched the seventh and eighth for the Volcanoes and Trevor Horn the ninth. Cris- tofer Ogando took over from Hernandez to start the bottom of the eighth, and Chester Pi- mentel pitched the ninth. Hernandez was the win- VOLLEY, continued from Page B1 on our JV team. I know we have the leadership that’s re- quired for successful season,” DeMello said. “All of them are competitors and I expect them to challenge each other every day in practice.” McNary has 42 girls in its volleyball program, 14 on each team—varsity, JV and fresh- man. Dividing up the three teams wasn’t easy. “It was a long tryout,” De- Mello said. “We’re carrying the largest squad that we can at every single level because tryouts were extremely com- petitive. “They know each player has skills we need as a team, each player is key to pushing our limits. They have to com- pete every time they step on the court or their spot is in jeopardy. It creates competi- tion and that is always good.” Playing in the new Moun- tain Valley Conference, the Lady Celts will be tested early. McNary travels to Bend, winner of the 2016 and 2017 5A state championships, on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Summit, the state runner-up in 2017 and champion in 2015, then comes to Keizer on Thursday, Sept. 6. “They’re very competi- tive and strong,” DeMello said. “It doesn’t matter that they’re coming from 5A. They are strong programs. It will be good for the girls to start the season with them. We are looking forward to it.” The Lady Celts open the 2018 season at home on Tues- day, Aug. 28 against Mountain View. 200 Water Street NE. Concert to Benefi t Migrant Families.
