PAGE A6, KEIZERTIMES, MAY 11, 2018 police scanner traffi c court Elude ends with crash at auto body shop NO LICENSE A Mt. Angel man tried to fl ee a Keizer police offi cer in north Salem and ended up in cuffs after crashing into a busi- ness Sunday, May 6. The incident began about 3:40 a.m. when Offi cer Kevin DeMarco saw a 2000 Honda Civic pull into the Jack in the Box drive-thru at 2801 Broad- way Street N.E. DeMarco pulled into an adjacent park- ing lot where he could try to get the vehicle’s license plate for a registration check. While DeMarco was still trying to get the plate identifi cation, the Civic pulled out of the drive- thru in reverse and over a curb. The driver exited the parking lot on Broadway, turned west on the Salem-Keizer Parkway and blew through a red light at the intersection of the Parkway and Liberty Street Northeast. After running the stop light, DeMarco activated his lights and siren and estimated the Honda continued travel- ing around 75 miles and hour away from him. He notifi ed Salem Police Department of the pursuit through dispatch and spotted the driver turning left on Market Street North- east against another red light and almost colliding with an- other vehicle. DeMarco terminated the pursuit, but began searching the surrounding neighbor- hood. “It’s common for fl eeing suspects to abandon the vehicle soon after police stop chasing them,” said Keizer Police De- partment Deputy Chief Jeff Kuhns. A short time later, DeMarco found the vehicle where it had crashed into the steel beam on the east side of CE Miller Auto Body Building.
