PAGE A2, KEIZERTIMES, APRIL 13, 2018 Regional transit planning includes Wheatland redux Friday, April 13 By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes A proposed revamp of Wheatland Road North is among the top projects on the Mid-Willamette Valley Coun- cil of Governments’ (MWV- COG) Regional Transporta- tion System Plan. MWVCOG helps coor- dinate funding for projects with regional as well as local impacts. Bundling projects that effect numerous areas bolsters chances of receiving state and federal funding and takes the burden off local tax- ing districts. The Regional Transportation System Plan is currently being updated and area residents can complete a survey on the plan goals at bit. ly/2IHkpop through Mon- day, April 16. Comments can also be submitted via email to Karen Odenthal, Kodenthal@ mwvcog.org. The project is high on the priority list for Mayor Cathy Clark who is seeking a third term. During an interview announcing her candidacy in February, Clark, who is chair of the Salem-Keizer Area Transportation Study Policy Committee, had high hopes for what a redesign can ac- complish. “We have to take a deeper look at the design of Wheat- land for safe and sustainable use,” Clark said. While some area residents have champi- oned the idea of reducing the speed limit on Wheatland as a catch-all solution, Clark has a bumper sticker-worthy re- sponse, “Design works better than signs.” Alzheimer Network’s Affair to Remember: A Night in Paris. Residents are invited to complete an online survey at bit.ly/MarionBroadband. More accurate data regard- ing home broadband capac- ity will be recorded if the survey is completed from a computer connected to a home or business line rather than a mobile hotspot. The county is conduct- ing an Economic Broadband Study and has contracted with Magellan Advisors, a broadband consultancy fi rm, to conduct a study to iden- tify the level and capacity of existing broadband internet throughout the county. Data obtained through the study will be used to identify un- served and underserved areas and to produce a county- wide broadband strategy to improve broadband access, KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald A redesign of Wheatland Road North, with a focus on creating better pedestrian and cycling paths, is one of several projects at the top of the list in the Regional Transportation Plan. Developing a plan for the Wheatland corridor that in- cludes multimodal transpor- tation such as cycling and pedestrian routes – with en- hanced crossing options – is among seven other items on the MWVCOG to-do list in the immediate future. The redesign will include the en- tire stretch of Wheatland from River Road North to Clear Lake Road Northeast In a January meeting of the policy committee, Clark noted that Wheatland Road serves a diverse cross section of the community. In addition to single-family residences, multi-family residences, and two nearby schools, the road reliability, and affordability, particularly in rural commu- nities. Marion County does not intend to be a broadband provider, but hopes to use the data collected encourage private broadband providers to enhance availability in un- derserved areas. Consultants met with rep- resentatives of the local busi- ness community throughout the fi rst week of April. serves two churches, a large retirement community, a Marion County Fire District No. 1 station and as a freight route for agriculture coming in from north of Keizer. Ac- commodating water treatment issues, turning movements and additional crossings will also factor into the redesign. The design portion of the rework is expected to cost about $213,000 with Keizer chipping in about $22,000 and federal grants paying for the remainder. If the over- all grant package, which will need to be vetted by the Or- egon Department of Trans- portation is approved, it could bring in about $9.3 million A pedestrian crossing River Road North near Sam Orcutt Way Northeast was injured when a vehicle collided with him. Keizer police offi cers were summoned to the scene of the crash about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. The pedestrian was found in the roadway with obvious injuries and was trans- ported to Salem Hospital. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with an investigation.
