PAGE B2, KEIZERTIMES, MARCH 23, 2018 McNary’s young golf team developing By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary knows what it has in its top two golfers as junior Matt Langenwalter and sopho- more Joe Dutcher return from the team that fi nished second in the Greater Valley Conference last season. The key will be who steps into the Celtics third and fourth spots. Amar Sidhu and Zach Roth have the most experience. Freshman Brady Jackson could also make a splash. “They’re just developing players,” McNary head coach Rick Ward said. “We’ve got some developing that’s got to take place and then I’ve got a really good group of young players that are learning. I think there’s some promise there. It’s just going to take some time. We’re just not going to put a kid out there in a varsity tour- nament who’s not ready to do that.” Langenwalter shot 153 over 32 holes to fi nish tied for sec- ond individually with Dylan Hadsall of West Salem at the district tournament last sea- son. While GVC low medalist Andrew Eyre of West Salem graduated, his younger brother Brandon is a freshman for the Titans. Dutcher shot 159 to place seventh at the district tour- nament last season. McNary graduated three seniors who fi nished in the top 20. Both Dutcher and Lang- enwalter’s families live by the McNary Golf Club. But Lan- genwalter didn’t begin playing competitively until he was 13. “I started practicing a lot and started getting into the game and got pretty passionate about it,” Langenwalter said. Dutcher, who lives by the fi fth hole, has played since he was 6 years old. Playing in the Tigard Invita- tional at Tualatin Country Club on March 12, neither got off to the start they were hoping for. Langenwalter shot 81 to lead the Celtics. “We started poorly, it was kind of a rough day out there, but I think we’re going to build off of it and be able to improve as a young team,” Langenwalter said. After shooting two over par on the front-9, Dutcher went 14-over on the back. “I was experiencing some back pain, took some Ibuprofen and got a little drowsy,” Dutch- er said. The Celtics play a league match at McNary Golf Club on April 9 beginning at 10 a.m. The district tournament is April 30-May 1 at Trysting Tree in Corvallis. “I like that golf course,” Lan- genwalter said. “They just reno- vated it actually so I’m kind of curious to see what the new design looks like so I’ll be up there practicing in the months leading up to it.” KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Members of McNary’s boys golf team Eoan Shirabaran, front, from left, Noah Martinez, Ryan Hansen, Nathan Young, Brady Jack- son, back, from left, Amar Sidhu, Joel Dutcher, Matt Langenwalter, Zach Roth and Adam Dang (not pictured) with head coach Rick Ward, hope to once again compete for the Greater Valley Conference championship this season. McNary girls 2nd in league match Behind a strong fi nish on the back nine, McNary’s girls golf team fi nished second in a league match at Michelbook Country Club in McMin- nville on Tuesday, March 20. The Lady Celts shot a team score of 434 to fi nish behind only Sprague’s 403. Individually, Hannah Elliot had two birdies on the back nine to shoot 100 to lead the Lady Celts. Lexi Ronning carded a 109. Juralee Stover shot 111 and Emma John fi n- ished with a 114. Ashley Zhu, of Salem Sa- lem, shot 80 for the best score of the day. McNary’s next league match is April 11 at McNary Golf Club at 10 a.m. WIN, continued from Page B1 Tualatin tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth and took the lead in the seventh on a RBI double to left fi eld. Allen pitched all seven innings, allowing just one earned run and three hits. Jacob Jackson scored Mc- Nary’s only run, leading off the bottom of the fi rst with a line drive single to center fi eld and then scoring on a double play. “We’re encouraged,” Keek- er said. “I like the guys’ atti- tudes right now. We’re learn- ing how to compete.” McNary couldn’t start a winning streak, falling to Tu- alatin at home 2-1 on Tuesday, March 20.
