FEBRUARY 16, 2018, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A3 Couples fi nd they are still learning after 171 years By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes When Gene Starns was asked which excuse his wife, Georgia, used most during their 66 years of marriage – I forgot, you forgot, I forgot you didn’t remember, and no hablas inglés – he found him- self in a bit of a pickle. “That’s a hard one cause I can’t remember,” Gene said. After having the possible an- swers reread for him, he went with “I forgot you didn’t re- member.” So it went during the fi rst-ever Not-So-Newlywed Game at Willamette Lutheran Retirement Community on Friday. Feb. 9. Three local couples, rep- resenting 171 years of mar- riage, took up the challenge of matching their partners’ answers to a series of occa- sionally revealing, and more frequently embarrassing, ques- tions. In addition to the Starns, Steve and JoAnn Warren, mar- ried for 49 years, and Del and Bev Colby, married for 56 years, took part in the fun. Kay Hayes, Willamette Lu- theran’s marketing and ad- missions director, emceed the game while Debbie Gurule, the campus’s activity director, assisted as hostess on the stage in the run-up to Valentine’s Day. While none of the couples ran away with the competi- tion, the Warrens won with 20 points to their opponents’ 15 each. Most of the questions for the event revolved around comparing their partners to food or animals, but one ques- tion seemed destined to end with a husband in the dog- police scanner A 20-year-old Keizer man accused of stealing “water en- hancers” worth about $20 has been charged with third-de- gree robbery after he resisted attempts by loss prevention of- fi cers to stop him. The incident was report- ed about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the newly-opened Waremart by Winco at 5450 River Road N. Keizer police offi cers re- sponded to the store where Carlitos Rosales-Felton was being detained by the store’s loss prevention offi cers. Ro- sales-Felton allegedly pock- eted fi ve MiO water enhanc- ers before attempting to leave the store without paying. When approached by the loss prevention offi cers, Ro- sales-Felton reportedly used physical force to stop loss pre- vention offi cers from detain- ing him. The use of force esca- lated a shoplifting charge to a robbery charge. MONDAY, FEB. 5 KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald TOP: The winners of the Not-So-Newlywed Game Steve and JoAnn Warren. When asked to rate the fi rst meal his wife ever served him on a scale of 1 to 10, Del Colby wasted little time in declaring the meal a disastrous “1.” When Bev was escorted back into the room and rat- ed it a more forgiving “5,” a chorus of laughter erupted. When Del revealed his rating, Bev admitted Del was the one who taught her how to cook. “Everything was fi ne until the cat died,” said Del. The Warrens were re- warded for their knowledge of each other with a wedding cake made out of towels. • 12:01 a.m. - Arrest for theft from vehicle on 1800 block Drexler Lane NE. • 7:55 a.m. - Disorderly conduct on 1600 block Lockhaven Drive NE. • 8:00 a.m. - Vandalism on 4400 block River Road N. • 3:49 p.m. - Warrant served to shoplifter on 5400 block River Road N. • 7:00 p.m. - Disorderly conduct on 2000 block Kennedy Circle NE. • 9:46 p.m. - Arrest for assault on 200 block Glynbrook Street N. • 11:08 p.m. - Warrant served on 800 block Cade Street NE.
