Today in History The last of the German forces fi ghting at Stalingrad surrender, despite Hitler’s earlier declaration that “Surrender is out of the question. The troops will defend themselves to the last!” The Battle of Stalingrad began in the summer of 1942, as German forces assaulted the city, a major industrial center and a potential strategic coup. —Feb. 2, 1943 By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes It can be easy to lose the forest for the trees given the glut of commercials on every television pitching the latest medical treatments for every conceivable ailment. But or- thodontist Dr. Jay Schofi eld has a clear view of his mission. “Orthodontics can change lives. We do a fair amount of pro bono work and when you have someone with several strikes against them, helping them feel better when they smile can be a small thing that has a big im- pact,” Schofi eld said. Schofi eld’s newest of- fi ce, with partner Dr. Stephen Yenne, is located at 5099 River Road N. and it joins a network of fi ve others connecting the two orthodontists with patients and communities from Bend to Dallas. Yenne & Schofi eld, opened for business about two months ago, but the business held its grand opening with a Keizer Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 24. The opportunity to open an offi ce in Keizer was brought to the pair by a local realtor. “The fi rst thing we did was look to see how many patients we had in Keizer and there Food 4 Thought The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see. — Ayn Rand, author, born Feb. 2, 1905 The Month Ahead 3893 COMMERCIAL ST SE THIS WEEK’S MOVIE TIMES Through Saturday, February 10 Pentacle Theatre presents Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa. Howald Dr. Stephen Yenne and Dr. Jay Schofi eld cut a ribbon at their new River Road offi ce Wednesday, Jan. 24. were already quite a few here and more in Silverton and sur- rounding areas who would use a Keizer offi ce,” said Schofi eld. Schofi eld and Yenne of- fer traditional orthodontic treatments as well a Invisalign treatments and schedule ap- pointments at the offi ce most convenient for their patients. It means that there are no regu- lar business hours, but they are accepting new patients. Call 971-362-0500 to schedule an appointment. Schofi eld said they looked at several River Road locations before settling on the former Big Town Hero spot in School- house Square. “One of the things we liked about this space was the win- dows and parking was impor- tant because there is a lot of in- and-out,” Schofi eld said. Yenne and Schofi eld have known each other since they were children attending school a grade apart in Salem and their friendship continued through dental training at Oregon Health and Science University. Yenne is a second-generation orthodontist and active mem- ber of local and state dental organizations. Schofi eld is an active participant in the same organizations and a founding member of the on-site dental clinic at the Salem Boys & Girls Club. The pair wasted little time in becoming an active part- ner in the Keizer community through the Keizer Cham- ber of Commerce. Within the fi rst few weeks of opening in November, Yenne & Schofi eld sponsored the Keizer Christ- mas Tree Lighting and then served hot chocolate at the offi ce during the Festival of Lights Parade. “Terri (McCowan), who works in our offi ce, has been a resident of Keizer for a long time and she mentioned the tree lighting and the parade and then doing hot chocolate because we had such a great lo- cation,” said Schofi eld. “We’re happy to get involved with those sorts of things because it’s a connection to the commu- nity, but the Keizer community is like no other in terms of how active and cohesive it is.” sudoku Enter dicits from 1-9 into the blank spaces. District Attorney Walt Beglau said the task force grew from the realization that there was “a gap” in enforcement between the DEA and street- level drug crimes. A lot of local kids say there isn’t anything to do around Salem-Keizer, but McNary grad David Liabraaten is doing something about it by putting on concerts at the Keizer Lions Club. “For kids around here who are under 21 -- there’s nothing,” Liabraaten said. “People… go to Portland [for entertainment] because they think they can’t have any fun around here -- but maybe they can.” Wednesday, February 14 Assistance League of Salem-Keizer’s 47th Annual Lasagna Lunch, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The luncheon will feature a member’s secret lasagna recipe including vegetarian options as well as take-out and delivery services for those who can’t make it.
