PAGE A16, KEIZERTIMES, JANUARY 12, 2018 McNary out swims West Salem By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary’s swim team dove back into the pool for two meets in three days. The Celtic boys edged West Salem 87-83 on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Kroc Center. Sophomore Kyle Hooper won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.38 seconds and junior Harrison Vaughn took fi rst in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12 to lead McNary to victory. Vaughn, Grant Biondi, Brock Wyer and Wyatt Sher- wood also won the 200 free relay in 1:42.64. Freshman Bella Beard touched the wall fi rst in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.63, the 200 free in 2:10.38 and swam on the winning 200 free relay with twin sister Alex, sophomore Alyssa Garvey and senior Haley Debban in 1:51.32. But that was not enough for the Lady Celts to defeat West Salem, who came out on top 95-74. Alex Beard also won the 500 free in 5:43.53 and Deb- ban had the fastest time in the 50 free, fi nishing in 27.68. Alex Beard won two more events on Thursday, Jan. 4 against McMinnville. She took fi rst in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.65 and the 200 IM in 2:25.24. Hooper again led the boys, winning the 200 IM in 2:13.16 and the 100 free in 54.23. McMinnville swept the meet as a team with the boys winning 119-51 and the girls outscoring McNary 113-57. The Celtics are back at the Kroc Center on Thursday, Jan. 25 against West Albany at 4:30 p.m. and then Tuesday, Jan. 30 versus North Salem at 2 p.m. The district meet is Feb. 9-10 at the McMinnville Aquatic Center. KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary sophomore Kyle Hooper won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle against McMinnville on Thursday, Jan. 4 in the Kroc Center. CELTS, continued from Page 13 with 1:38 remaining and McNary never looked back. The Lady Celts outscored West Salem 20-11 in the fourth quarter. Downer led the Lady Celts with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Alfaro added 10 points and fi ve rebounds. Emma Kin- ler gave McNary a boost on the boards, pulling down six rebounds to go a long with seven points. Leah Doutt had seven points, four rebounds and four assists. Kailey Doutt had nine points and three re- bounds. “The scoring was very even tonight,” McNary head coach Elizabeth Doran said. “That’s great to see. That’s something that we really haven’t had, a lot of people contributing in scoring and today it was more people contributing, which was awe- some.” After playing too much one-and-one ball in the sec- ond quarter, the Lady Celts did a better job of distribut- ing in the second half. “They (West Salem) made a run and we were back on our heels and turned into more of a one-on-one game,” Doran said. “We talked to them about that at halftime, getting the best shot that we can get as a team instead of trying to go one-on-one.” KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary sophomore Nicolette Parra has started the season 18-3 thanks to hard work and a desire to win. PARRA, continued from Page 13 “I think I got tired of los- ing and I usually go and work out after practice, too,” Parra said. “I don’t want to lose. I shouldn’t be losing. I’ve defi - nitely gained muscle and lost fat. I don’t think I’m a good wrestler. I just think I have a lot of heart.” McNary coach Jason Ebbs has seen a big difference in Para this season. “Between last year and this year, her desire to win has grown tremendously,” Ebbs said. “Last year, she was just all smiles and having a good time and good teammate and all those great things. But this year you can see a different tone to her. She’s coming around and she’s got a lot or promise ahead of her and just looking forward to her oppor- tunities to keep growing.” Para’s goals for the rest of this season include wrestling her way into McNary’s var- sity lineup and then qualifying for the fi rst OSAA sanctioned girls state wrestling tourna- ment. McNary took three girls to Reno. All three placed as Brooke Burrows took fi fth at 100 pounds and Tia Vincent fi nished fi fth at 170. KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary freshman Leah Doutt scored seven points to go along with four rebounds and four as- sists in a 52-38 win over West Salem on Friday, Jan. 5. d n a Gr pening Register Now Online FREE T-BALL!
