PAGE A12, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 Lady Celts start 3-0 NORTH, continued from Page 11 McNary’s girls soccer team has yet to allow a goal in three games after going to Gresham and winning 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 7. “Both teams came out with energy, and Gresham brought a level physicality and grit that McNary had not seen yet this season,” head coach A.J. Nash said. “In the opening ten min- utes play was even; then Mc- Nary began to settle in and started to create chances.” In the 22nd minute, Gina Munguia served a corner kick to Jessy Shore, who fi red a header off the crossbar. After Katy Wyatt missed a shot just outside the far post, the Lady Celts fi nally got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute as Izzy Haselip beat her defender on the out- side and drove a ball into the box that was fumbled by the keeper and fi nished by Abigail Hawley. Led by Samantha Alfano, McNary continued to bring consistent defensive pressure in the second half. In the 68th minute, Haw- ley then found space on the right wing and whipped a cross that was fi nished on a header by Wyatt to give the Lady Celts an insurance goal. Goalkeeper Sydney Snapp picked up her third shutout of the season. McNary hosts Battle Ground, Wash. on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. in its fi nal non-league match of the sea- son. The Lady Celts open Greater Valley Conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at West Salem. “That’s something that they need to learn from this. They know better.” Slow starts have been a common theme this sea- son. McNary played a similar match at McKay. “They have to fi nd their groove right off the bat,” De- Mello said. “It’s something that we’ve been working on. It’s the goal they set every single game. They just need to come out strong straight from the get go and remember routines when we’re at away games.” The Lady Celts had less trouble in the second and third games, winning easily 25-12 and 25-13. “We were looking to clean up our passes,” DeMello said. “They were really tight to the net. We need to make sure that we clean that up as well as ev- erything you do before you Submitted McNary sophomore Samantha Alfano has led the Lady Celts to three shutouts this season. Celtics blank Lebanon McNary’s boys soccer team went to Lebanon and won 4-0 on Thursday, Sept. 7. The Celtics scored their fi rst goal in the opening minute of play as Q Gamble fi nished a cross from Miguel Bravo. McNary put more shots on goal in the fi rst half but couldn’t get any past Leba- non’s keeper. But just like the fi rst half, the Celtics added a quick goal in the second when Michael Reyes was able to fi nd the back of the net with an assist from Alex Sala- zar. McNary added two more goals in the fi nal eight min- utes. First, Gamble scored his second goal with another as- sist from Salazar. Eli Petilo then completed the scoring on an assist by Reyes. Goalkeeper Charles Varela had eight saves in the victory. The Celtics wrap up non- league play on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. against Madison. McNary then hosts West Sa- lem on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in its fi rst GVC match. SPRAGUE, continued from Page 11 that performance with 350 yards rushing and a 50-21 win over the Celtics. “We didn’t do a great job of manning our gaps,” Mc- Nary head coach Jeff Auvinen said of last season’s game with Sprague. “They’re going to try to be a physical team. We need to be able to defeat blocks and go in our gap and tackle well. I think we’re more disciplined this year. I don’t know if we’re more physical inside but I think we’re more disciplined and I think it’s going to ben- efi t us.” While Sprague graduated KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary’s volleyball team celebrates during a 3-0 win at North Salem on Thursday, Sept. 7. touch a ball. We started con- necting. We got our middles on. We started distributing the ball and defense, they made their adjustments. The girls fi nally started getting where they needed to be. Sometimes it’s the difference between one step whether or not you can make that play.” Valerie Diede fi nished the match with nine kills and fi ve blocks. Caiya Ewert had fi ve kills and six blocks. Zoie Warner added fi ve kills, seven digs and six aces while leading the Lady Celts in serve receive percentage. The win improved Mc- Nary’s record to 4-1 with the only loss coming to undefeat- ed South Salem. “We’re just taking it one day and one game at a time,” DeMello said. “I always see what we can improve on. Right now they’re serving well. They’re taking advantage of what they can and when they get momentum we tend to get runs. That’s all I can ask of them right now.” one half of its running back tandem in Dane McKinney, who scored two touchdowns against the Celtics last season, Noah Mellen returns as well as quarterback Spencer Plant and tight end/defensive end Teagan Quitoriano, who has committed to the University of Oregon. “We’ve got to play harder up front than we have ever played,” Kiser said. “They have a good offense but I feel like if we step up and practice harder and show them a bet- ter defense and throw them off and get into their heads a little bit, and by doing that we have somebody else (McNary) that deserves to be up in the top (of the GVC) than just them (Sprague) and West.” The Olympians return only one starter on the offensive line. “They’ve got a young line, a bunch of inexperienced guys, but they do a good job of coaching line over there,” Auvinen said. Auvinen pointed to limit- ing penalties and winning the turnover margin as keys to the game. McNary has a plus-5 turnover margin through the fi rst two games but has 185 yards in penalties. “I think if we play well, we’ll be in good shape,” Auvinen said. “We tell the kids all of the time, ‘Do what you can to get better and the scoreboard will take care of itself.’” KEIZER CLASSIFIEDS KEIZER CLASSIFIEDS HELP WANTED HELP WANTED NOW HIRING FOR FULL-TIME CLASS-A TRUCK DRIVERS IN AURORA, OR The Foster Farms is currently accepting applications for full-time Class-A Feed Delivery Drivers and for its feed mill in Aurora, OR.
