PAGE A6, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 8, 2017 police scanner Teen arrested for robbery after altercation A 16-year-old girl ended up charged with third degree rob- bery after a shoplifting attempt resulted in an altercation with a loss prevention offi cer (LPO). Keizer police were called to Goodwill, 3840 River Road N., on the report of a fi ght about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. Upon arrival, offi cers learned the girl was attempting to leave the store with unpaid- for merchandise when she was confronted by a LPO. The LPO told the female she was under arrest and grabbed onto her arm. The female resisted arrest by fi ghting and attempt- ing to trip the LPO. A friend of the girl also grabbed the LPO in an at- tempt to pull him away from the suspect. Once police si- rens were heard, the suspect stopped fi ghting the LPO and was cooperative. No one was injured. Be- cause the girl fought with the LPO, she is charged with rob- bery rather than theft. Limit exposure, drink lots of water during heavy smoke By RANDOM PENDRAGON Keizertimes intern Fires in the Cascade moun- tain range have sent smoke into Marion County with more likely in the coming days and weeks until the fl ames are brought under control. In the midst of Or- egon’s con- tinuing fi res and the in- creasing safety concerns of the smoke that results from it, the Oregon Health Authority recommends limiting expo- sure to the smoke as much as possible. According to their website, “Wildfi re smoke is a mixture of gases and fi ne par- ticles from burning trees and other plant material,” which can be dangerous if inhaled. Not vacuuming, reduc- ing sources of indoor smoke like wood-burning stoves and candles, and use of high- effi ciency air fi lters can help protect against the harm- ful effects of smoke. The OHA also says that N95 respira- tors will pro- vide some but not complete protection against the smoke, and standard dust and paper masks should not be relied on for protection. While individual sus- ceptibility to smoke-related health issues vary, the OHA warns that smoke may worsen the symptoms of those with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and provides a higher risk towards infants, children, pregnant women, and persons over 65 years of age. Personal protection decisions should be made on a “case-by-case, day- to-day basis,” based on the needs of the individual. Exposure to smoke can lead to coughing, throat ir- ritation, headaches or dry or watery eyes. Drinking plenty of water can combat all those symptoms. Pets and other animals will also be affected by smoke so it is recommended to reduce their exposure to smoky areas and provide them with water just as you would for a human.
