SEPTEMBER 1, 2017, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE B3 Roundup: Lady Celts start season with win McNary’s girls soccer team defeated Woodburn 1-0 on Tuesday, Aug. 29 to begin the 2017 campaign. Head coach A.J. Nash said the Lady Celts controlled the majority of the possession in the opening half, but struggled to fi nish against a well-orga- nized and disciplined Wood- burn defense. McNary was fl agged nine times for off-sides in the fi rst half due to a disciplined Woodburn backline. In the 25th minute ju- nior Katy Wyatt connected with a header from a corner kick driven to the back post by junior Gina Munguia that glanced off the top of the cross bar. Just three minutes later, strong pressure by sophomore forward Haley Hughes created a turnover deep in the Wood- burn end that was gathered by junior Abigail Hawley who served the ball across the box to Katy Wyatt for the fi nish and the Lady Celts took a 1-0 lead into the half. In the second half, Nash said McNary kept up great team pressure, and again con- trolled the majority of the possession. In the 55th minute, sopho- more Julie Dieker had a strong header off a corner kick from Gina Munguia that forced a save from the Woodburn keeper. The Bulldogs threatened on a few counter attacks, but the McNary defense was up to the challenge. The Celts frontline forced a couple great saves by the Woodburn keeper who kept the scoreline close, and Mc- Nary held onto the win. “Both teams kept great in- tensity for the entire 80 min- utes and battled up to the fi nal whistle,” Nash said. McNary ran 12 plays on offense and defense against Canby, the host Spartans and then Cor- vallis. After a slow start, Auvinen g n i k c u r t n e r e m sum thought McNary improved with each scrimmage. “We got better as the day progressed,” he said. “First game, especially on defense we weren’t very good. I think we were used to playing ourselves so we needed to fi nd another gear and get a little more of a killer instinct. Against Canby, we were feeling our way and getting used to varsity game speed. Marist, we were better and then even better against Corvallis.” This Friday’s home game against North Salem kicks off at 7 p.m. McNary senior Jakoby Doke guaranteed the Celtics will be ready. “It’s just a matter of walk- ing in there and thinking any team can win any game,” Doke said. “No game is given to you. We just have to play as hard as we can just like any other game.” FOLLOW THE KEIZERTIMES ON: n o i t a r b e l e c d y fun l i m a f ce i v r e s e uttl h s s raffle fr 8 t p e s - iday 3PM – 9PM 2615 Portland Rd NE, Salem The Salem pood Truck Pod and Barrel and Keg are julling together to sujjort FRIENDS OF CENTER 50+.
