Everyone in the Volcanoes’ starting lineup hit safely, with Logan Baldwin getting four hits and coming out of the game with a .387 batting aver- age. Malique Ziegler had three hits. Ryan Kirby had 2, includ- ing his sixth home run, and drove in fi ve runs. The Volcanoes scored fi ve runs in the fi rst inning and fi ve in the third. The Hawks had one run each in the fi fth, sixth, and eighth. Starter Jose Marte went six innings and, despite allowing nine hits, struck out fi ve and walked only one. He got the win for a 2-3 record. Thursday, Aug. 17: Volcanoes 9, Boise 5 This guaranteed the fi rst home series win for Salem- Keizer in 2017; only one game remains in this series. Once again, the Volcanoes outscored the Hawks by nine runs, with everyone in the starting lineup getting at least one hit. Rob Calabrese, the No. 8 hitter, had four hits, and Kevin Rivera, the No. 9 hitter, had three. Eight of the Volcanoes’ runs came in the fi fth inning. Six singles, a double, Michael Sex- ton’s fi rst professional home run, an error, and a wild pitch contributed to the rally. Luis Pino was the winning pitcher in relief with a 1-2 re- cord. Boise starter Ryan Luna was the losing pitcher; his re- cord is 2-4. Friday, Aug. 18: Volcanoes 4, Boise 3 The Volcanoes fi nally got a series sweep at home. Boise scored the fi rst two runs of the game in the third inning, Salem-Keizer scored three in the third, the Hawks went ahead by a run in the fourth, and the Volcanoes got the last run of the game in the seventh. In the bottom of the third, singles by Kevin Rivera, Bryce Johnson, and Logan Baldwin loaded the bases. A sacrifi ce fl y by Orlando Garcia drove in Rivera, and Manuel Geraldo singled Johnson and Baldwin home. Logan Webb was the win- ning pitcher in relief at 2-0. Ethan Westphal was the losing pitcher, also in relief, with a 3-2 record. Saturday, Aug. 19: Volcanoes 6, Hillsboro 0 Salem-Keizer moved into a fi rst-place second-half tie in the Southern Division with the second Volcano shutout of the season. Four pitchers combined for the shutout. Stet Woods pitched the fi rst three innings, Alejandro De La Rosa came in for two innings and got the win for a 3-3 record, Aaron Phillips pitched the next three, and John Russell fi nished the job in the ninth. Everyone in the Volcano lineup had at least one hit ex- cept for the .375-hitting Lo- gan Baldwin. Malique Ziegler shone in center fi eld. The big inning for Salem- Keizer was the sixth. Two sin- gles, a double, a walk, an error, and a pitch that hit Rob Cal- abrese produced four runs. Hillsboro starter Tyler Vail was the losing pitcher at 0-3. Sunday, Aug. 20: Hillsboro 2, Volcanoes 0 The visitors answered Sat- urday’s shutout with a shutout of their own, holding the Vol- canoes to two hits. The Hops’ starter, Brian Shaffer, left the game after three innings, so Kevin Mc- Canna, who relieved him and went the rest of the way, got the win for a record of 3-1. Salem-Keizer’s Julio Benitez took the loss to go 1-5 but accomplished a Northwest League rarity, a complete game. Bryce Johnson and Logan Baldwin got the only Volcano hits; both were singles. Hillsboro scored both runs in the fi rst inning. Ryan Grot- john singled with Camden Duzenack on base, and Luis Lara singled Duzenack home. Grotjohn scored on a ground out. Tuesday, Aug. 22: Hillsboro 9, Volcanoes 6 This was a sloppy one, with four Salem-Keizer errors and 3 by Hillsboro. The Volcanoes’ errors made six of their runs unearned, and the Hops’ errors made two of theirs unearned. The brightest spot for the Volcanoes was Ryan Kirby’s seventh home run of the sea- son, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Seven of Hillsboro’s runs came in the third, before the Volcanoes got their fi rst hit. They came on four singles, a triple by Daulton Varsho, a walk, a hit batsman, two stolen bases, two errors, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. Both starting pitchers were the pitchers of record. Jhoan Duran won his fi fth against two losses, and Jose Marte lost his fourth against two wins. Matt Brill had his fi rst save. Submitted A trio of fi shermen show off a sturgeon they caught in the Columbia River. Anglers are coming from all over the world to Oregon to fi sh for sturgeon. WILSON, continued from Page B1 that large doesn’t happen ev- ery day, there are good num- bers in the 5-8 foot range to send you slinking back to the gym. There are outfi tters all over the world. Clients come to them and want to hunt or fi sh for some specifi c species. Outfi tters will then book them with guides in some country, state or province. Outfi tters will usually ar- range hotels, rental cars and other necessities. Fishermen are the same all over the world. There is something about the whole experience that seems to satisfy something deep inside man. Fortunately, two outfi tters in Germany discovered the world class fi shery we have in Oregon. uninitiated angler say, “Why fi sh for those ugly things? Like dragging in an old log.” Answer is, that person has never hooked one. There is a reason they are fondly referred to as “fresh water marlin.” Hook into one 7-10 feet long that catapults out of the water several times, you will understand the thrill of it all. How big are these stur- geon? Stop in at the sturgeon pond at Bonneville Dam and see for yourself. Think about having one of those on your line? The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says a 10-footer will weigh 400 pounds. During the recent July trips, Koskela and Foster landed two at nine and a half feet. Although hooking fi sh Foster and Koskela had them for 10 action-packed days. Catching oversized stur- geon isn’t your typical cast out a bait and reel in a fi sh. We’re talking about fi shing that can become work in a hurry. How about anchoring up in heavy river current, us- ing a 16 oz sinker, a whole one-pound shad for bait, 80# test line, rods and reels used to land monster halibut, and then hook a fi sh and have to chase it downriver for maybe up to an hour. Battling oversized sturgeon for 10 straight days is not for the faint of heart. Why sturgeon?
