Today in History One month to the day after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, effectively beginning the First World War. — July 28, 1914 Food 4 Thought “I want to live my life, not record it.” — Jackie Kennedy, born July 28, 1929 The Month Ahead The Salem metropolitan statistical area’s (MSA) un- employment rate increased to 4.1 percent in June, up from its revised May rate of 3.8 percent, according to data recently released from the state employment de- partment. Oregon’s statewide unem- ployment rate was 3.7 per- cent in June, essentially un- changed from its revised rate in May of 3.6 percent. The national unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in June. Salem’s June employment gains were more than nor- mal. Salem added an estimat- ed 1,200 jobs in June when an increase of roughly 200 would be expected, meaning seasonally adjusted non-farm employment increased 1,000. Salem’s employment was nearly 11,000, or 7.1 per- cent, above its pre-recession employment peak, which oc- curred in February 2008. Employment in the Salem MSA grew 3,300 over the past year, a 2 percent increase. Salem’s growth was outpaced by the state, but not the na- tion. Oregon’s employment grew 2.9 percent over the past year. Nationally, employment was up 1.5 percent over the past 12 months. Salem’s pri- vate sector added 2,600 jobs over the past year, growing 2.2 percent. The public sec- tor added 700 jobs, growing 1.6 percent. The fastest-growing major private-sector industries over the past year included: con- struction (added 900 jobs, grew 9.6 percent); and min- ing and logging (added 100 jobs, grew 8.3 percent). Fire damages 2 homes Keizer First District spent more than two and half hours at the 900 block of Moneda Ave. in Keizer Saturday, July 15, put- ting out fi res on two adjacent homes. The fi re started with a wood fence between the two houses before spreading to bushes, a wood deck on one of the proper- ties and then into the attic of both homes, where it was main- tained. KFD was dispatched at 7:58 p.m. Salem Fire assisted with two Keizer engines as well as a battalion team and medic unit. The last unit on the scene cleared at 10:37 p.m. Neither house was occupiable for the night. Investigation into the cause of the fi re is ongoing.
