PAGE A12, KEIZERTIMES, MAY 19, 2017 Celtics open playoffs vs Tualatin By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary’s baseball team (13-11, 10-6) will face a famil- iar opponent in the fi rst round of the state playoffs when the 16-seeded Celtics host No. 17 Tualatin (13-10, 12-5) on Monday, May 22 at 5 p.m. The two squads met on April 29 with McNary win- ning 13-7. But Celtics head coach Larry Keeker isn’t taking too much away from that victory. “We’d just got off a three- game week and so did they,” Keeker said. “I’m a 100 percent sure nei- ther team saw the No. 1 pitch- er from either side. We have at least some data on their hitters, which is helpful. We have that to go by. Of course they have it as well. We know we’re not going to see the same pitcher, at least we wouldn’t expect it.” Tualatin fi nished third in the Three Rivers League be- hind two top 10 teams in the state—No. 9 Tigard and No. 1 West Linn. “They took West Linn right to the wire three times in a row so they’re certainly capa- ble,” Keeker said. “Regardless of who we’re playing, we feel like we can compete with pretty much anybody. We’re certainly not afraid of anybody.” McNary senior Josiah Gil- bert will get the start on the mound against Tualatin. But Riley Hays, Kyle McCallis- ter and the rest of the Celtic pitchers will be ready if need- ed. “He’s (Gilbert) the guy that deserves to be on the hill so he’s going to get the ball fi rst,” Keeker said. “There’s no to- morrow. If we have to make a change somewhere in the game than we will. It’s not like we’re going to save somebody for game two because we have to win game one just to get to game two.” McNary swept McKay 6-1, 12-2 on May 10 and 12 to fi n- ish fi fth in the Greater Valley Conference. On senior night, Hays won the fi rst game, allowing just three hits and one run over seven innings. McCallister and Carl Rum- baugh combined to shut down McKay in the second game. KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary honored its 10 seniors, Daniel Johnson, front, left, Jonah Geist, Riley Hays, Joshua Benson, Brendan Frizelle, Caleb Kiefi uk Yates, Kevin Martin, Tyler Ellertson, Matthew Ismay and Josiah Gilbert before its fi nal regular season home game on May 10. The Celtics combined for 23 hits over the two games. Matthew Ismay was 6-for- 8 in the series with four runs and three RBIs. Brendan Frizelle was 4-for- CCMS boys, Whiteaker girls win all-city championships By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Keizer athletes dominated the All-City Middle School Championships. Claggett Creek’s boys and Whiteaker’s girls each bested 10 other teams to win the track and fi eld meet at North Salem High School on Tues- day, May 9. Dyami Ross led Claggett Creek, winning the 100-me- ter run in 11.61 seconds and the 200 in 24.98. Ross also ran the anchor leg on the top 4x100 relay team, which along with Ga- briel Martinez, Ethan Martin and Amanuel Figueroa, fi n- ished in 46.68. Martin placed second to Rios in both the 100 in 11.74 and the 200 in 25.21. Rian Canini led the White- aker boys to fi fth place in the team standings by winning the 100 hurdles in 15.61 and the high jump in 5 feet, 8 inches. Cole Garland leaped 18-07.25 to take second in the long jump. Whiteaker’s girls fi nished more than 52 points ahead of second place Judson. TENNIS, continued from Page 10 Perez, who primarily played No. 3 doubles last season, also gives McNary head coach Garrett Jensen an example of how far hard work and a posi- tive attitude can take a player. “She put in time, which is the biggest thing and she has a really good attitude,” Jensen said. “She’s always receptive to anything I’m telling her to 8 with four runs and three RBIs. “It was good for us to score some runs,” Keeker said. “It allowed our pitchers to relax and throw strikes.” McNary fi nished the regu- lar season on a six-game win- ning streak. “You want to be hot,” Keeker said. “And the loss- es prior to those wins were tight losses. We feel that we’ve done a pretty good job at the plate lately and guys are being productive up and down the lineup. We’re by no means sat- isfi ed.” G N I N E P O D GRAN E S U O H N E OP SATURDAY, MAY 20 1–5 PM 4131 RIVER RD N - KEIZER AT HOME REAL ESTATE is thankful for friends, family and clients, past, present and future!
