McNary junior Hannah
Childress will attempt to ad-
vance to her third straight
OSAA tennis state tourna-
ment Saturday, May 13 in Sa-
lem.
The Greater Valley Con-
ference singles tournament
began Wednesday, May 10 at
the Salem Tennis and Swim
Center.
As the No. 3 seed, Chil-
dress will compete against 35
other girls with the top four
advancing to the state tour-
nament next weekend at the
Tualatin Hills Tennis Center
in Beaverton.
Childress fi nished third
in the GVC singles tourna-
ment last year after winning
the doubles tournament her
freshman season with sister
Sandy.
Childress lost to two girls
this season—No. 1 seed Anya
Gerasimova of West Salem
and No. 2 seed Ceanne Elliot
of West Albany. She also had
closes matches with South
Salem freshman Abby Fedor,
who enters the district tour-
nament as the 4 seed.
“I know there’s tough
competition,” Childress said.
“We’re all very close skill wise.
The two matches that I lost
against Anya and Ceanne, I do
feel like I could’ve defi nitely
done better scoring wise and
I think I can beat them. I have
a chance. I’d like to at least get
my seeding. I’m just going to
do my best because that’s all I
can do.”

“What struck me at the end
of the process is Josiah in his
innocent way didn’t even real-
ize how good he was,” Keeker
said. “It was just that humble
innocence that got my at-

McNary junior Hannah Childress entered the GVC district tour-
nament as the No. 3 seed.
Katherine Perez, Dianna
Cervantes and Tanveer Sand-
hu will also represent McNary
in the district singles tourna-
ment. The teams of Natalie
Gonzalez and Sofi a Zielinski,
Mireille Martinez and Lilia
Hawes, McKenna Seig and
Taylor Walker and Juana Bara-
jas and Melissa Jimenez are
playing in the doubles tour-
nament.
“I’m hoping at least half
of our team wins their fi rst
round match,” McNary head
coach Garrett Jensen said. “I
think that’s a reasonable goal.
We fi nished 3-9 on the sea-
son, which is one win better
than last year. I hope that we
either meet or exceed that
ranking in the district as well.
If we can bump up a notch
and beat a team that beat us
during the regular season, that
would be great.”
tention about him as a ninth
grader that I remember.”
By his sophomore year, Gil-
bert was pitching on the var-
sity team.
“I remember going out
to state my sophomore year,”
Gilbert said. “I was the third
starter and we played against
Sheldon and I got the oppor-
tunity to go pitch against the
team that ended up winning
state and I gave up two earned
runs, two unearned runs in
four innings of work. It was a
great experience for me and
something I defi nitely needed.
It was just exceptional.”
Gilbert was voted a team
captain before the 2017 season.
“Josiah has earned every bit
of this in terms of his future to
play baseball at Pacifi c Univer-
sity,” Keeker said.
“We want to put a good
swing on a good pitch. We’ve
been successful with that ap-
proach.”
The Celtics added a run
each in the third, fourth and
fi fth to continue to pad their
lead.
Ismay was 3-for-4 with a
triple and three RBIs. Covalt
was also 3-for-4 with a double.
Josiah Gilbert earned the
win on the mound, striking
out fi ve and allowing seven
hits and three earned runs
over six innings. Geist got the
fi nal three outs to fi nish off the

Just two pitches later, Faith
Danner continued the big in-
ning, hitting a solo home run
to center fi eld.
McMinnville began to
slowly chip away at McNary’s
lead in the top of the second,
scoring two runs on a home
run and double.
But with Hudson back in
the circle, the Lady Celts add-
ed three more runs in the bot-
tom of the second.
The Grizzlies threw four
different pitchers at McNary
and made substitutions every
inning in the infi eld and out-
fi eld but none of it mattered as
Diaz also won the 4x400
relay in 3:32.36.
Alex Shararbarin cleared
12-06 to win the pole vault.
Angie Martushev went
8 feet to win the girls pole
vault. Emma Garland won
the 800 girls race in 2:41.37.
Alyssa Looney, Court-
ney Giessinger, Dawma-
nique Rodriguez and Kai-
ley Doutt took fi rst in the
4x100 relay in 51.94.
Looney and Giessinger,
McNary’s best two chances
to qualify for the state tour-
Saxons.
After back-to-back losses
to Sprague and West Salem
dropped McNary’s league re-
cord to 4-6, the Celtics’ four-
game winning streak began on
Wednesday, May 3 with a 9-3
win over the Titans.
McNary came from behind
to win 5-4 at South Salem on
Friday, May 5.
The Celtics took the lead
in the top of the seventh when
Ismay scored on a Benson
single.
The Saxons got the tying
run to third in the bottom of
the seventh but he was thrown
out at home to end the game,
trying to score on a sacrifi ce
fl y.
McNary then took care of
business at Forest Grove on
Saturday, May 6, winning 8-1.
Ismay pitched the fi rst fi ve
innings, allowing just two hits,
a walk and no runs.
“The guys just stayed the
course and we kept telling
them that we believe and
one of these days we’re going
to get on a roll so right now
we’re enjoying the roll,” Keek-
er said. I”t’s best to be playing
the best baseball at the end of
the year so that’s what we’re
gonna try to do. We’re going
to try to take this thing as long
as we possibly can.”
The Celtics were scheduled
to fi nish league play May 10-
11 against McKay. The state
playoffs begin Monday, May
22.
the Celts continued to knock
around McMinnville.
“We took the informa-
tion that we had from the fi rst
game and we fi gured out if we
can just poke the ball and just
get good base hits, we’ll be
fi ne,” Wise said. “Yesterday we
worked on zero defense and
we spent two hours hitting
and it showed today. We had
a plan and they stuck with it
and executed it perfectly.”
McNary loaded the bases
in the second. After Cepeda
scored on a wild pitch, Kinler
hit a sacrifi ce fl y to right fi eld
to drive in Ebner. Carr then
came home on a pop fl y single
by Duran.
The Lady Celts scored four
more runs in the third. Witt
drove in Danner and Sabella
Alfaro with a single to left
fi eld.
After another pitching
change, Carr hit a two-out
single to score Witt. Duran
then added another single to
bring home Carr.
Alfaro scored McNary’s
fi nal run of the game in the
fourth on a ground ball by
Ebner.
Danner, who pitched all
fi ve innings, allowed just one
hit in the top of the fi fth be-
fore fi nishing off the Grizzlies
to earn the win.
The Lady Celts improved
to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the
GVC. Their fi nal league game
is Friday, May 12 at home
against Sprague.
The state tournament be-
gins Monday, May 22.
