Today in History By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes The rates for camping in Keizer Rapids Park in the days leading up to the total solar eclipse passing over the city were set at a meeting of the Keizer Festival Advisory Board (KFAB) Monday, Feb. 27. Campers looking to scoop up spots will need to pony up $150 for three nights of tent camping or $300 for three nights of RV camping. Members of KFAB also decided a fl at rate would be charged rather than a per- night fee, meaning campers will have to pay the full fee re- gardless of whether they stay all three nights. Keizer City Councilor Marlene Parsons has taken over leadership of the eclipse event coordination after the prior coordinator resigned. The prices set fall in line with rates being charged at other camping sites along the path of the eclipse, said Allen President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making The Star-Spangled Banner the offi cial national anthem of the United States. — March 3, 1931 Barker, who has been helping coordinate the camp plan- ning. “Madras is charging $150 for tents and $300 for RVs for fi ve nights,” Barker said. While the rate is somewhat higher for Keizer Rapids park, very few spaces along the path of the eclipse are still available and many sold out within hours months ago. “We are also right on the I-5 and a lot of the other cites offer- ing camping don’t have that,” Barker added. Spaces would be avail- able for reservation when the event website, keizereclipse. com, goes live. That was ex- pected sometime in the early days of March. Campers who reserve a spot will not be able to choose a space in the park at the time of their reservation. Those will be assigned at check-in with the hope of accommodating requests for groups of camp- ers to be in close proximity to each other, Barker said. 08. 21. 2017 eclipse watch 11:25 PT A total of 166 spaces will be available. Campers will need to abide by the same rules governing state park camping. Proceeds from the camp- ing reservations will benefi t the Keizer Parks Foundation with the intent of donating them to the city’s parks as a one-time shot in the arm. In other business: • Parsons said she would be requesting an $8,000 line item in the city’s 2017-18 budget to pay for portable toilets during the eclipse fes- tival. She is also working on a $5,000 request to the Keizer Parks Foundation to level out KT on vacation Robin Barney took her Keizertimes to the Oregon coast and met some locals at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.
