FEBRUARY 24, 2017, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A5 Tea fundraiser a hit for Keizer library The Keizer Community Library held its annual fundraiser, Afternoon Tea at the Library, at the Keizer Heritage Center on Sunday, Feb. 19. About 80 people attended the event which in- cluded tea, a light tea time menu, live music and readings from Oregon poet Sue Patterson Home-schooled children acted as servers for the tea. Violinist Martha Hughes entertained as the attendees found their tables, bid in a silent auction and inspected raffl e items. Four generations of the McCarty family were in attendance. Marie McCarty, a former library volunteer was joined by her daughter Kathleen LaMear, granddaughter Amy Thomas and great-granddaughter Sadie Martin. Two hours shifts are available on Tuesdays and Thursday; four-hour shifts are available on Saturdays. The museum, which pre- serves Keizer’s history dating back to the mid-19th centu- ry, hopes to extend museum hours, especially during sum- mer months. Duties of a museum host include asking visitors to sign in, answer questions about exhibits and the Heritage Building. New hosts will be trained. McNary Area Writing Contest deadline March 3 The deadline is approaching for the fi rst- ever McNary Area Writing Contest and the winners will be published in an anthology of student work. Students at Claggett Creek and Whiteaker middle schools and McNary High School are all eligible to enter. There are two categories, poetry and prose – prose can be either fi ction or nonfi ction. One winner from each category will be selected from each school. The contest is being sponsored by the McNary High School Write Club. Entries can be about any subject or fall into any genre. Submissions of no more than fi ve typed, double-spaced pages can be sent to: mcnarywriters@gmail.com. Questions can also be sent to that email address. The deadline for entering is Friday, March 3. Entries will be judged on clarity, character development (if appropriate), proper word choice, style, creativity, impact on the reader, and originality. Current club members will be judging the entries. The grand prize-winning entries from each school will be included in The Write Club’s annual anthology of student work.
