DECEMBER 23, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A7 police scanner Keizer offi cer nabs car thief KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald Kathy Young adds canned goods to the box of Frank Hoevet. Boxes are yearlong effort Seventy-fi ve of the boxes went to local military families the remainder went to families in need identifi ed by staff of Keizer area schools and Salem- Keizer Head Start programs. “We added to the number of boxes for military families this year because they said the need was so great,” said Linville. Military families are identifi ed with the assistance of the Or- egon National Guard. In addition to food pur- chased by Elks members from Grocery Outlet, Gubser El- ementary School students and staff collected more than 4,000 pounds of food for the boxes and Perrydale FFA, of Amity, donated fresh fruit and veg- etables. With a frenzy of activity, members of the Keizer Elks and a number of other volunteers from throughout the commu- nity packed up 220 food boxes for delivery to local families for the holiday season. It’s a long-running tradition for the fraternal order and social club, but one members work toward all year long. Packing took place Friday, Dec. 18, and boxes were delivered Saturday, Dec. 19. “We raised $4,000 on the fl oor of the Lodge since just the beginning of December, but it’s something we save for all year long,” said Robin Linville, proj- ect coordinator. “It’s a big thing for us and it’s always been a big thing.” An attempt to locate a car thief as snow blanketed the Mid-Willamette Valley ended with the suspect in cuffs and booked on multiple charges. About 5 p.m. on Wednes- day, Dec. 14, Offi cer Jeremie Fletcher was dispatched in an attempt to locate a car stolen two days prior. GPS tracking supplied by the vehicle’s fi nance com- pany placed it in the vicinity of Keizer Station, but remote shut off was not possible, which suggested that the sys- tem had been tampered with. The complainant said the car had been taken without her permission, but the sus- pect, Carlos Cadena, had two warrants out for his arrest and additional cautions on his record for attempting to elude offi cers, possession of methamphetamine, and car- rying a concealed weapon. The last known location of the vehicle was the park- ing lot of Verizon in Keizer Station and Fletcher spotted a car matching the descrip- tion parked, but still running. The vehicle was attempt- ing to leave the parking lot, but got inadvertently blocked in by another departing vehi- cle. Fletcher parked and acti- vated his overhead lights and spotlight. The driver’s side door opened, and Fletcher drew his service pistol. A female emerged from the driver’s side of the ve- hicle and complied with commands to raise her hands. Fletcher then spotted a pas- senger who turned out to be Cadena. Both Cadena and the driv- er, Patricia Cardenas, were taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle revealed two glass pipes that tested positive for methamphetamine and a clear plastic baggie believed to contain an additional 1.1 grams of meth. Cadena was arrested on outstanding warrants in Washington and Marion counties and was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance. Cardenas was arrested for an outstanding warrant. Both were transported to Marion County Correctional Facility.
