NOVEMBER 18, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A5 KeizerCommunity KEIZERTIMES.COM Keizer schools honor veterans By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes “This is priceless. This is re- ally what it’s all about,” said Art Cummins after he and nearly 50 other military veterans were greeted to a standing ovation by Claggett Creek Middle School students at an assembly on Thursday, Nov. 10. Cummins, now a lawyer in Salem, was in the Air Force for 11 years during the Vietnam War. As a member of Ameri- can Legion Post 136, he has attended Claggett Creek’s Vet- eran’s Day assembly the past four years. “We just think it’s a fabulous activity,” Cummins said. “It’s what we do, celebrate veterans and help in whatever way we can. We’ve been in the class- rooms with them and they ask serious questions about our experience, about what the ser- vice is today and some of those kids will go and serve and take advantage of the GI bill and things like that when they get out. It’s not a bad job today.” McNary High School also honored veterans Thursday with Living History Day. Collin Roberts and Pearl Prinslow, cadets in McNary’s AFJROTC, performed an armed drill routine for the guests and other cadets es- corted veterans to classrooms to share stories of their service. The MHS band played Stars and Stripes and America the Beautiful.
