Expires: 10-31-16. KEIZERTIMES.COM McNary wins play-in games By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary’s girls and boys soccer teams are both going to the playoffs. Playing at home, the Celt- ics made it clear they’re one of the best 32 teams in the state, easily defeating South Med- ford 4-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 25. On the same night, the Lady Celts went to Newberg and won 1-0 to clinch their spot. The McNary boys put three shots on goal in the fi rst seven minutes. Then in the 10th minute, Gustavo Villal- vazo fi red a free kick off the post, which Javier Zepeda fi nished to put the Celtics up 1-0. Zepeda then beat a South Medford defender and put a ball past the goalkeeper to ex- pand the Celtics lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute. McNary added two more goals in the fi nal 11 minutes, the fi rst from Luis Martinez and then Francisco Rios com- pleted the scoring on an assist from Bryan Keo. “We’re creating opportuni- ties, we’re scoring goals and looking good.,” McNary head coach Miguel Camarena said. “We didn’t allow any goals and that’s key. If you want to win games and be champion, you have to be zero in the back. We’ve played solid D in the last three or four games.” The Celtics, No. 30, will play at Jesuit, No. 3, on Satur- day, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. “We’ll take it one game at a time and see what happens on Saturday,” Camarena said. The Lady Celts scored their goal in the fourth min- ute when Gina Munguia put a ball through to Abigail Haw- ley, who beat the Newberg goalkeeper and then got the ball past three defenders into the net. “We came out really strong and I think caught them off guard,” McNary head coach A.J. Nash said. To complete the shutout, Lady Celts goalkeeper Sydney Snapp made two saves in the fi nal 12 minutes, the fi rst with her foot and then another with only fi ve minutes re- maining that Nash called the “save of the year.” Due to injuries, McNary played without Natalia Gon- zalez and Anita Lao. Senior captains Kayla Evans and Abi- gail Smith also missed time but returned to the game. “I was really proud of our subs,” Nash said. McNary, No. 30, will play at Sherwood, No. 3, on Satur- day, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. in the fi rst round. It will be the Lady Celts fi rst playoff game since 2009 and just the second since 1992. KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary senior Javier Zepeda and Luis Martinez celebrate a goal in the second half of a 4-0 victory over South Medford. Whiteaker vs. Claggett Creek Keizer middle schools to face off on the gridiron By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Whiteaker Middle School head football coach Tom Larimer knows slowing down rival Claggett Creek will be diffi cult when the two teams meet on Wednes- day, Nov. 2. “Their backs (Ethan Mar- tin and Dyami Rios) are re- ally, really fast,” Larimer said. “If they get to the edge, they’re gone because not only are they fast but they are pretty strong and tough. You need to contain them. “Their quarterback (Jack McCarty) doesn’t throw a lot but when he does, he’s good and that makes them really, really hard to beat, because I just think they’re going to be really tough to defend.” After losing its fi rst two games, Claggett split into two teams, varsity and ju- nior varsity, at the end of September and has since been dominant, going 4-0 and outscoring its oppo- nent’s 174-52. The Panthers defeated Houck 44-18 on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Martin had four touch- downs. McCarty threw for two scores and Rios also got into the end zone. TeJohn Mc- Cormick scored his fi rst touch- down of the season as well. On defense, Jose Martinez-Reyes and Michael Sly each recovered fumbles, Sunny Hoang had an interception and Grady Burrows recovered an onside kick. Please see GRIDIRON, Page 13 Volleyball matches move to McNary By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Scott Coburn has coached volleyball at Whiteaker Mid- dle School for 25 years and Shirley Richardson has been at Claggett Creek since the school opened in 2001. But when the two pro- grams play at McNary High School on Tuesday, Nov. 1, that’ll be a fi rst. While the two schools have played one another every year, it’s been in each other’s gyms. “It will be fun and new for the girls,” Coburn said. “They’re all going to be teammates there next year. It’s a good start for them getting to know each oth- er and getting in the gym they’ll be playing in. The Claggett one they always look forward to because some of them play basketball together. They’re friends off the court. It’s just fun to play against people like that.” With one set of matches before playing its Keizer rival, Whiteaker’s four teams were a combined 26-2, with the var- sity squad, coached by Co- burn, undefeated. “This is a very athletic team,” Coburn said. “Their skill level is higher than a lot of teams I’ve had. We don’t have the height that some other teams have had. We just have to scrap and get the ball. They’re very ath- letic and very competitive. Claggett’s been very com- petitive this year. They’ve beaten some of the better teams in the league so I Please see NETS, Page 13 KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley Top: Whiteaker quarterback Rian Canini will face off against Claggett Creek running back Dyami Rios on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
