SEPTEMBER 16, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A7 Wanted: SAFETY, MCSO continued from Page A1 cadets The Marion County Sher- iff ’s Offi ce is recruiting for its Cadet Program. The program introduces cadets to what it takes to be a patrol deputy, pa- role and probation deputy or corrections deputy. To join the Cadet Program, a person must be between 14-and-a-half and 20 years old, and they must be enrolled full time in school with a 2.5 grade point average. Individuals who are se- lected will participate in an interview process and must pass a background investiga- tion. Successful applicants will begin an eight-week cadet academy starting in January. The classes will be held on Sundays. Applications are due Oct. 14 by 5 p.m. Once trained, individuals will ride along with deputies on patrol, participate in com- munity relations programs, assist with traffi c control and security, and learn more about the professions asso- ciated with the fi eld of law enforcement. The cadets will be expected to dedicate 20 hours of volunteer work each month. For more information, go to www.GoMcso.com and click on the Cadet Unit link for an application. encompass, committee member Pat Fisher was already talking funding. “It's going to involve an investment and the city might be able to go after state or federal money,” she said. Next on the list of priorities is installing a bike repair rack similar to one installed at the Salem-Keizer Transit Center at Keizer Station. The set-up includes an air pump, several tools, and even a repair manual available by scanning a QR code with a phone. The repair station, manufactured by Dero, is designed for “simple maintenance, such as changing a tire, tightening a loose chain or pumping air into a fl at,” said Roxanne Rolls, program coordinator for Cherriots Trip Choice. The Cherriots unit cost about $1,200 according to Fisher, who looked into the possibility of installing more of them. Sangster initially envisioned another repair station in the vicinity of Keizer Civic Center as a more central location and a destination for those using Carlson Skate Park, but Maurice wanted to take more time in deciding where to locate it once the funds were raised. “ I would like to think about an area where people bicycle in the community,” Maurice said, GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT In addition to sorting out priorities for the coming months, members of the Traffi c, Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee also discussed: KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald The Traffi c, Bikeways and Pedestrian Committee is considering adding a bike repair station to the city’s offerings. The one pic- tured was installed at the Keizer Transit Center in May. noting that Cherry Avenue Northeast is frequented by those commuting to and from work in Salem. “If it's to fulfi ll a need, it should be convenient.” Sangster hoped to enlist some of the area's cycling groups to help cover the cost of the unit. Fisher championed the third item on the priority list: applying for a Safe Routes to Schools grant that would allow the city to study the barriers preventing students from walking to school, e.g. lack of sidewalks, and how to eliminate them. She hoped to meet with Keizer's school board representative, Chuck Lee, to enlist his voice as the project moves ahead. Safe Routes to School is a national, federal program with Cart 2 Art benefi t auction Sept. 24 The Straub Environmental Center is getting ready for the upcoming Cart 2 Art benefi t Saturday, Sept. 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will be located in the Dye House at Willa- mette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill Street S.E. The Cart 2 Art features an auction of • Concerns from a resident of The Vineyards neighborhood in north Keizer about car traffi c passing through intersec- tions without pausing for cross traffi c. Committee members asked Keizer Po- lice Department Sgt. Trevor Wenning to fi nd out if there were any traffi c-related in- cidents in the vicinity. Wenning did not know of any off-hand, but also suggested that residents with a concern lodge it through the city’s website rather than taking it to the committee or a city coun- cilor fi rst. “The reason being that there will be a lag time go- ing through the commit- tee or city council, with a report through the website, we may be able to jump on an issue within 24 hours,” Wenning said. art from recycled and repur- posed materials. Earlier this year, members of the committee spearheaded an effort to apply for a “Bicycle Friendly” designation with the League of American Bicyclists. Sangster wants the group to reach out to local businesses to let them know about the effort and get them to enlist in Travel Oregon's Bike Friendly Business Program. Local businesses of all types can register for the program To lodge a concern with the city on an issue (traffi c- related or otherwise), go to keizer.org and click on “Contact Us” at the bottom of the page. • A petition from resi- dents in the 4000 block of Verda Lane Northeast to reduce speed limits on the road between Dearborn Avenue Northeast and the Salem-Keizer Parkway. Wenning said that most of the citations on Verda arise between Lockhaven Drive Northeast and Chemawa Road Northeast, and not because traffi c enforcement offi cers have neglected the south end. Committee members re- quested that a speed-mea- suring device be deployed in the area. Wenning said it would not create much ad- ditional work to do so. provided they offer a modicum of bike-friendly services. “The benefi t to the businesses is that they get added to the statewide biking map,” Sangster said. Planning a biking event to coincide with the Iris Festival and a speed study of Wheatland ranked lowest on the committee's priority list.
