SEPTEMBER 9, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A11 Lady Celts open at home with 5-1 win By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Behind a strong first half, McNary defeated Central 5-1 Tuesday, Sept. 6 in its home opener. The Lady Celtics scored their first goal seven minutes in when Kateyln Tallon head- ed in a corner kick from Isa- bella Heath. “I was trying to get it to the far post so someone could head it in,” Heath said. “This is my first year taking corner kicks and it’s going good so far.” Anita Lao then finished a cross from Kayla Evans to give MHS a quick 2-0 lead. Abigail Hawley scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute. With eight minutes re- maining in the first half, Ju- lie Dieker had the Lady Celts most unique goal of the night, firing a shot off the post, which then hit her face and went past the keeper and into the net. Central scored the first goal of the second half to get within 4-1 with 35 minutes remaining. While McNary continued to control possession, the Lady Celtics couldn’t finish, hitting the post and kicking the ball directly at the keeper or over the goal. “We could have finished so many more goals,” Heath said. With just two minutes left to play, Gina Munguia scored the Lady Celtics only goal of the second half on a free kick from about 25 yards out. “We started well and we came out a little flat in the sec- ond half,” McNary coach AJ Nash said. “We still have some stuff to work on. We did beat up the post. It was actually just the final touch. We had 10 to 12 clear opportunities to fin- ish in the second half and you saw them go just over the bar or just on the outside. We’ll work on finishing but part of that is focus and technique. As a young team, it doesn’t sur- prise me. We can’t let those opportunities go to waste.” MHS also defeated Eagle Point 5-1 Thursday, Sept. 1. “We’re working really hard in practice and that’s obviously showing,” Heath said. With wins over Woodburn, Eagle Point and now Cen- tral, the Lady Celts are 3-0 but Nash knows the season is young. “We know the quality of teams that we’ve played, the way they finished last year in the state, was towards the bot- tom half,” he said. “These are games we expected to win. Overall, we’ve done the job early.” KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary sophomore Abigail Hawley scored one of the Lady Celts ive goals Tuesday, Sept. 6 in a 5-1 victory over visiting Central. Hunter leads volleyball team over McMinnville By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Sydney Hunter made sure McNary’s first road trip was a successful one. I was really pleased with that.” Valerie Diede had four blocks and four kills for the Lady Celts. Shaylee Williams had five kills, Samantha Van Voorhis had 24 assists and Jaylene Montano added seven digs. The match was McNary’s first tough test after easily defeating McKay to open the season. Myers liked how the Lady Celts reacted, especially in tight sets one and two. “I thought we did a really good job during what we call red zone, once you hit inside 20 to 25, I thought we really did, we stayed aggressive and kept pressure on them,” he said. “I was very pleased with how the girls responded. It was very good on their part. They didn’t get down at any time. Their enthusiasm stayed up. The excitement stayed up and they really stayed positive and communicated extremely well.” McNary wasn’t as successful Tuesday, Sept. 6.
