The Celts won three of fi ve dual meets to take fourth. The Celtics beat Oregon City High School 59-12, zone and trapping press. That went well and we got a lot of turnovers and it got better as we went along,” said Doutt. The Lady Celts held the Grizzlies to 10 points in the third quarter and six in the fourth to walk away with the win. “The big thing was to make sure we were focused defensively and I thought the girls were phenomenal. Especially in the fi rst quar- ter where McMinnville had trouble getting shots off let alone making any of them,” Handley said. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes A win over South Salem High School Tuesday, Feb. 2, could put the Celtics in a tie for the lead of the Greater Val- ley Conference. But, to get there, the Celts will have to overcome Forest Grove High School in a game Friday, Jan. 29. McNary travels to meet the Vikings who played the Celts fast and tough when they fi rst met last month. “We took away two of their guards who are big shooters, but we may have been a little surprised by their secondary scorers. We made some adjust- ments that allowed us to dictate the game in the second half,” said Ryan Kirch, McNary head coach. The Celts won the teams’ fi rst contest 76-62. “This time, we have to play better all-around defense and continue to hold their two big scorers,” said Harry Cavell, a McNary senior. The Keizer team completed the fi rst round-robin of the GVC with a win over McMin- nville High School 58-20. The Celts held the Griz- zlies scoreless in the fi rst period while running up an 11-point lead. The score was 24-6 at halftime. It was midway through the third quarter before McMin- nville cracked double digits on the scoreboard. “Defensively we were awe- some. Our goal in every game is to hold them to less than 32 and we held them to 20,” said Cavell. “Offensively, we didn’t score as effectively as we want- ed to against their zone, but it’s a learning process and we had glimpses of good zone offense.” Celt Junior Mathew Ismay led all scoring with 13 points; Trent Van Cleave put in 13; Chandler Cavell had eight KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Cavell and Goff also both had dunks in the game. “We’re trying to focus on playing possession-by-posses- sion. We’ve got to do a better job spacingwise and timewise in the half court. I thought we were okay, but we can do do better with the 2-3 zone Mc- Minnville put up in front of us,” said Kirch.
