PAGE A12, KEIZERTIMES, JANUARY 22, 2016 Hoop stars Sophie Schurr of Gubser Elementary School and Ryan Lyda of Clear Lake Elemen- tary School both took fi rst place in the Keizer Elks Hoop Shoot on Dec. 12 for the ages 8-9 catego- ry. Both will compete in the district Hoop Shoot in Silverton on Jan. 30. Submitted GIRLS, continued from Page A10 “I thought we ran our de- fense well and we just started working on our trap. We were able to get a lot of steals off of that. It contributed to a lot of good plays and breakaways,” Downer said. After only 10 days on the court with a new look, the team looked as though they’d been running it all year, Handley added. “We haven’t been zoned in a while either so this game was a good opportunity for us to work on our post moves and pinning defenders. What we’ve been working on in practice is directly translating into what we’ve experienced in games,” Handley said. While the week left little doubt regarding the team’s abilities, Hingston said there was still room to grow. “I want to see us value ev- ery possession and play even more tenacious on defense,” she said. Swimmers top Olympians By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes The McNary High School girls and boys varsity swim- ming teams picked up their third consecutive wins at the Kroc Center Thursday, Jan. 14. The girls pulled out a 102- 63 win over Sprague High School and the boys won 109- 45. Georgio Corrieri, an ex- change student hailing from Livorno in Tuscany, Italy, had the biggest day of the meet for the boys. He won both the 100 freestyle, in 57.42, and 100 backstroke, in 1:08.74. “I was kind of stressed, more than usual, but I fi nished my 100 free and I’d dropped my time by three seconds. It was crazy,” said Corrieri. He was also part of the winning 400 free relay. The wins were, in part, the result of the teams’ strategies leading up to their fi nal meets of the season and district com- petition, said Casey Lewin, McNary head coach. “We’re pushing hard right now, doing a lot of yardage and more intense swims, but we’ll be tapering off to get ready for district and focus on technique over the next week KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald Celt Brock Wyer swims in a freestyle relay two weeks ago. Wyer was the lead-off swimmer in the winning medley relay team vs. Sprague. or so,” Lewin said. In addition to Corrieri, Lewin singled out junior Jake Wyer as a swimmer on the cusp of doing big things for the Celtic boys. Senior Evan Alger, who had a part in the winning the 200 medley and 200 free re- lay teams at the Sprague meet, said he’s hoping that the 200 free team makes it to state this year. “It’s been two years since we had that chance and I want to go again,” Alger said. “Times are a lot better this year, but coming together as a team is still a big thing for us. We have a lot of younger swimmers and we need to work on encouraging each other in meets.” In other boys’ events, Celtic winners were: Brock Wyer, Parker Dean, Jake Wyer and Alger in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.15; Grant Biondi in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.00; J. Wyer in the 50 free in 25.33; Alger, Biondi, Harrison Vaughn and J. Wyer in the 200 free relay in 1:42.66; Vaughn in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.68; and Vaughn, Isaiah Holt, Corrieri and Biondi in the 400 free relay in 3:58.35. Lady Celt race winners were: Abby McCoy, Kiana Briones, Sarah Eckert and Emily Alger in the 200 medley relay in 2:10.07; Marissa Kuch in the 200 free in 2:01.28; Kuch in the 50 free in 25.35; Bailey White in the 100 butterfl y in 1:14.91; Eckert, Briones, Alger and Kuch in the 200 free relay in Sam Goesch CLU, Agent Sam Goesch Ins Agcy Inc 3975 River Road North Keizer, OR 97303 Web: SamGoesch.com Bus: 503-393-6252 1211999 State Farm , Bloomington, IL BUY ONE , GET ONE FREE ADMISSION PRESENT THIS COUPON AT THE DOOR 1:47.35; Lizzie Bryant in the 100 backstroke in 1:11.31; and McCoy, Haley Debban, Samantha Williams and Kuch in 400 free relay in 4:09.83. Team bonding has helped the girls push forward, said Williams. “Just getting to know people in your lane makes a difference. It makes it more fun for everybody,” she said. “We’ve all really been prac- ticing on the events we know we’re good at, but also trying a lot of other events and that’s lifted us up.” Williams is shooting for a new personal record in the 100 butterfl y by the end of the season. She’s clocking in around 1:12 currently. Lewin said Kylie McCarty and White are two of the girls he is expecting big things from not only in the coming weeks, but the coming years. “Kylie is really putting up a lot of good times swimming everywhere for us this season. Bailey has had some awesome butterfl y swims and she’s got a lot of potential to be a big contributor for us,” Lewin said. McCarty is a freshman and White is a sophomore. 2016 Mid-Willamette Valley COUPON-COUPON-COUPON-COUPON-COUPON February 5th & 6th Fri 4pm – 9pm • Sat 10am – 5pm Salem Convention Center 200 Commercial St. SE Salem First 100 Attendees — Friday Only Receive a FREE GIFT!
