OSF actors take on McNary residency Trivia time: When did the word “swagger” fi rst enter the English canon? Answer: About 1590, the fi rst appearance in print was in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. That knowledge bomb was brought to you by Laura Montes and Orion Bradshaw, two visiting actors from Ash- land’s Oregon Shakespeare Festival, who treated McNary High School students to ex- clusive performances and workshops at the school last week. The pair conducted a brief residency at the home of the Celtics Dec. 9 and 10. Their purpose? To de-mystify The Bard. “Shakespeare only used about 2,100 words in all of his plays and some of them are still a mystery,” said Bradshaw. While students in some workshops used Hamlet as a jumping off point. Others played simple word games with a Shakespearean twist. In some exercises students were tasked with making up a word (Shakespeare is fa- mous for this) that a partner had to defi ne and then the originator had to use it in a The Keizer Miracle of Christmas Lights Display ends Saturday, Dec. 26. Cars will be roaming the neighborhood from 6 to 10 p.m. through the day after Christmas. The route is about 3.5 miles long, and can take several hours to complete on busy weekends. Sno Cop barricades will lead drivers through the neighborhood. There’s no admission fee, but the event is a fundraiser for hungry families in the mid-Willamette Valley, and donations are always wel- come. Cans and non-perish- able food donations can be dropped at a donation site set up on Mistwood Drive NE. Visitors wishing to take photos in front of the displays are encouraged to stay on sidewalks and out of yards. The display is also walk- able, with sidewalks through- out the Gubser neighbor- hood. If you choose to walk it, please park at either White- aker Middle School, 1605 Lockhaven Drive NE, or at Gubser Elementary School, 6610 14th Avenue NE. A Holiday Lights Walk through the Gubser neigh- borhood is being arranged by Just Walk Salem. Walkers are encouraged to meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21 at the corner of 14th Avenue and Marigold Street for a two-mile stroll. Walkers are asked to bring a donation to the Marion-Polk Food Share. Bradshaw said the point of the games was to make the player more comfortable with taking chances. “I’m scared every time I take the stage, but I can’t let it stop me from performing,” he said.
