PAGE A6, KEIZERTIMES, NOVEMBER 20, 2015 Keizer couple strikes it rich on Friday the 13th Friday the 13th is the new lucky day for Bar- ry Nix of Keizer. Barry was shopping at the Fred Meyer off Sa- lem Parkway and decided to buy an Oregon’s Game Megabucks ticket on what supposedly is an unlucky day. “I like playing Megabucks because it’s local and the odds are better than the other multi-state games,” Nix said. “I play every now and then, and won $40 once and thought I was a big winner.” Monday morning, Nix was back at Fred Mey- er and checked his ticket when the scanner told him to visit the lottery offi ce. Without checking his numbers, he assumed he had matched fi ve of six numbers, and headed to the lottery offi ce. “When they told me at the window that I had won $6.6 million, I almost lost it,” Nix said. “When the people behind the counter said con- gratulations, I kept looking behind me. I couldn’t believe it. I am not an emotional person, but I had to remember to breathe. I just couldn’t be- lieve it. I’m not sure I believe it now.” Players can validate their tickets at the lot- tery offi ce and then have 60 days to decide how to take the winnings. Nix opted to validate the ticket and then come back Tuesday morning with a fi nancial plan, and his very surprised wife. “One of the biggest challenges I had was how I was going to tell my wife,” he said. “I went to her work and took her to lunch.” Barry opted to split the prize with his wife, Janice. The couple have both entered an exclu- sive club, becoming the 250th and 251st Mega- bucks millionaires. While Barry and Janice claimed their prize quickly, Oregon Lottery offi cials are still wait- ing for a $6.4 million Oregon’s Game Mega- bucks prize that was purchased on Aug. 24 to be claimed. The ticket was sold in Bend and the winning numbers were 15-27-32-39-44-45. The winner has 12 months from the date of the drawing to claim the prize, with the fi nal day to claim the prize Aug. 24, 2016. Proceeds from Oregon Lottery sales fund education, parks, economic development and watershed projects. The Oregon Lottery reminds players to al- ways sign the back of their lottery tickets, re- gardless of the game. In the event of winning a jackpot, they should consult with a trusted fi - nancial planner or similar professional to develop a plan for their winnings. Prize winners of more than $50,000 should contact the Lottery offi ce to schedule an appointment to claim their prize. Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tick- ets on April 25, 1985, it has earned nearly $10 billion for economic development, public edu- cation, state parks and watershed enhancements.
