The induction ceremony is Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame honors Oregon ath- letes, teams, coaches and oth- ers who have made a signifi - cant contribution to sports in Oregon. Upon his induction, Doherty will become the fi fth coach of Oregon boys bas- ketball to be honor, joining Nick Robertson (699 wins in 41 years), Dick Gray (560 wins in 38 years) and James Torson and John Warren, who coached boys basketball be- fore moving on to the colle- giate ranks. In 1965, Doherty was the fi rst boys basketball coach hired at the newly established McNary High School. Dur- ing four seasons, his teams compiled a win-loss record of 57-40, winning two league championships and the 1968 state championship. The 1968 Celtics, with a 21-6 record, were the fi rst in Oregon since 1928 to win a state champi- onship during a school’s fi rst state tournament appearance. When he retired in 2012 following his 50th season, Doherty’s Oregon high school coaching record stood at 850- 390, the most wins ever by a coach of Oregon prep basket- ball and fi fth largest for wins in the western United States. In 2002, he was induct- ed into the National High School Athletic Coaches As- sociation Hall of Fame, and in 2007, was named National Coach of the Year by the Na- tional Federation of High School Coaches Association. KEIZERTIMES/Craig Murphy Ask Mr. Trash ©1986 Q. Can I put plastic bags into the big blue recycle cart? A. Sorry, plastic bags cannot go into the blue cart because they get tangled in the sorting equipment and cause major delays. TRY THESE HELPFUL IDEAS INSTEAD: • Use them to tie-off odorous garbage before tossing into garbage cart • Re-use them or, if possible, recycle them at the store that you got them from. • Call the RECYCLE HOTLINE (503) 390-4000 for other possible recycling locations. • Ask your store to bag your purchases in paper instead. The box is for returning books and other media when the library itself is closed. Long-time library volun- teer George Bachik rolled up his sleeves, put his carpentry skills to work and created a custom book drop. “The Board of Directors of Keizer Community Li- brary expressed a need for a secure way patrons could re- turn books when the library is closed. I volunteered to build a lockable ‘drop box.’ I used the Heritage Center building as inspiration for the design,” said Bachik “It was a rewarding way to volunteer.” “We could have pur- chased a ready-made drop box for hundreds of dollars,” said Library Board President Daisy Santana Hickman. “But George came up with a custom product that not only saved limited resources, but also refl ects our location at the Heritage Center and showcases Keizer’s volunteer Fall special! 5 lessons for $ 85 Ruth Sonnenschein AT UPTOWN MUSIC Piano & Voice Lessons Wednesdays & Thursdays Morning hours available CALL 503- 983- 3092 or 503- 393-4437 spirit.” Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 1 to 7 p.m.; Friday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. The all-volunteer library is seeking additional community volunteers.
