District crews respond to
calls within six minutes more
than 90 percent of the time,
but call volume is increasing
each year and putting more
wear and tear on the
fl eet.
“We need
three am-
bulances
to cover
the com-
plete 24
days as
some ve-
hicles are
rotated out
of service
for repairs and
maintenance,”
Cowan said.
Money raised through
the bond approval would pay
for fi ve new ambulances, three
fi re engines, a refurbishment
of the current ladder truck, a
rescue rig and a brush fi re ve-
hicle as well as other equip-
ment like heart monitors and a
new vehicle extrication device.
A new ambulance runs about
$250,000, engines run about
$500,000.
Cowan said that a refreshed
fl eet and equipment will take
advantage of all the latest
technology. For ex-
ample, new heart
monitors will
be able to
diagnose
cardiac
problems
in
the
fi eld, but
the cost
is about
$35,000
each.
“The idea
is that we come
to your emergency
and have everything that we
need to do the job you need us
to do wherever you are, but we
need the equipment to do it,”
Cowan said.
