Later in the third quarter, Mary added his third touch- down on a run of 11 yards, giv- ing McNary a 34-13 lead. McKay closed the scoring late in the game with a 47-yard touchdown run as the Celtics cleared the benches. McNary’s offense was led by Mary and Revis with 186 and 108 yards rushing, respec- tively. Both players gave credit to the starting offensive line with tackles Jabez Rhoades and Christian Messina, guards Josh- ua Schmeltzer and Wyatt Sher- wood and center Collin Penner. “Those guys work real hard in practice,” said Mary. “They make our job easier,” added Revis. Former Celtic, and now of- fensive line coach, Geoff White was pleased with the perfor- mance of the offensive line. “They are getting better ev- ery week,” White said. Boston Smith added 60 yards rushing, Nigel Harris had 40 yards, Riley Gates chipped in 20, Jacob Fritz had 16 and Ben- son contributed 13 yards on the ground. Mary and Harris added catches of 29 and 24 yards from quarterback David Allen. Smith caught a 17-yard pass from Ryan Bamford. “Bamford and Allen did a great job of running the of- fense,” said offensive coordina- tor George Carter, a former star receiver on the national title team at Linfi eld College. The defense was led by line- backer Griffi n Oliveira with nine tackles. Devyn Schurr and Bo Working added four tack- les each with Revis and Pres- ton contributing three tackles apiece. Hunter wanted to see a re- newed focus during practice to avoid another loss. “If we go hard during practice that will mean we have better games,” Hunter said. By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes The McNary High School boys varsity soccer team appears to have hit a midseason slump. After losing their fi rst game in the last contest of the preseason, the Celtics were only able to battle North Salem High School to a 2-2 draw. “Honestly, we didn’t play very well. Defensively, we weren’t doing our thing and we should have had more goals,” said Celt Gustavo Villalvazo. He felt the team should have had a 3-0 lead at the half, but it just didn’t pan out. Villalvazo scored the fi rst goal of match on a penalty kick in the 21st minute. North knotted the game on a goal by Dylan Reirson in the 38th minute and went ahead on a goal by Edwin Ortiz in the 45th minute. McNary goalkeeper Sebastian Lopez recorded three saves in the outing. Villalvazo said the team had great leadership from Jorge Garcia, Paulo Reyes and Luis Audelo throughout the week leading up to the game, but when the whistle sounded the Celts still hadn’t fl ushed the loss to Jesuit High School a week before. McNary has games in the offi ng with West Albany and McKay high schools. The Celts host the Bulldogs Friday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m., and travel to face McKay at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. Villalvazo had plans for both games. “I want to pressure West Albany a lot and score at least three goals in the second half. McKay is a tough team, but once we take down their key players the game will go our way,” he said.
