Sept. 3: Eugene 5, Volcanoes 1 The Emeralds came close to eliminating the Volcanoes from contention for the second-half South Division title by winning the rubber game of the series. Eugene led all the way, scoring one run each in the fi rst, fourth and fi fth innings and two in the ninth, in which the Emeralds set Salem- Keizer down in order with three strikeouts. The visitors outhit the Volcanoes 13-5. Julio Pena hit his sixth home run in the fi fth for the only Salem-Keizer run. Adbert Alzolay was the winning pitcher in relief at 6-2. Sept. 4: Volcanoes 8, Boise 3 The Volcanoes kept their playoff hopes alive with this victory in the fi rst of a three- game road series. Salem-Keizer bats came alive, but the club ended its string of tightly fi elded games, making four errors. The Hawks, however, made six. Three of the Volcanoes’ runs came in the fi rst inning, and they kept the lead all the way. Two errors, a double by Chris Shaw, two singles and a force out produced the runs. Boise came back with one run in the fi rst but then was held to one run in the fourth and one in the eighth. The seventh was the Volcanoes’ biggest inning with four runs. They came on doubles by Ronnie Jebavy and Shaw, a single, a walk, an error and a sacrifi ce fl y. Both starting pitchers were the pitchers of record. The Volcanoes’ Luis Pino ran his record to 4-1, and the Hawks’ Colin Welmon went to 2-5. Saturday: Volcanoes 2, Boise 1 Salem-Keizer had a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Boise tied the score, but the Volcanoes added a run in the eighth and stayed in the running for post-season play. Chris Shaw’s 12th home run of the season provided the fi rst run, with starting pitcher Drew Leenhouts keeping the Hawks scoreless through six innings before being relieved because of his pitch count. Cory Taylor replaced him and gave up Boise’s run on a walk, a stolen base and a single. In the top of the eighth, Scott Price walked with two out, Steven Duggar moved him to second base with a bunt single, and Steven Duggar singled Price home. Boise upsets Volcanoes By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes A 9-1 drubbing from low- ly Boise ended the regular season, but only the regular season, for the Volcanoes on Sunday night. Hillsboro’s sweep of Eu- gene guaranteed post-season play for Salem-Keizer, which despite a 39-37 record for the regular season earned the right to play a three-game se- ries at Volcanoes Stadium for the Southern Division title in the Northwest League. It was a contest for the fi rst fi ve innings, because the Hawks had a surmount- able 4-1 lead after fi ve. How- ever, they held the Volcanoes scoreless the rest of the way and scored fi ve runs in the sixth. Salem-Keizer returned to its leaky-glove ways, mak- ing fi ve errors to one for Boise. In the top of the fi rst, Ste- ven Duggar hit a one-out double to left fi eld and scored as Miguel Gomez singled to center. Boise came back in the fi rst with a run as Jensen Park singled to right, driving in Marcos Derkes, who had hit a leadoff double to left. Volcano starter Nolan Riggs held Boise scoreless for the next two innings but was removed for Nate Santiago after giving up a double to Brian Mundell and walking Terry McClure in the fourth. Wesley Jones grounded into a force out of Mundell at third base, but a throwing error by Dylan Dobson got McClure to third and Jones to second. Scott Burcham doubled to center, scoring McClure and File Volcano pitcher Nolan Riggs sends one across the plate in a game earlier this season. Jones. The runs were charged to Riggs, making him the los- ing pitcher at 4-3. Santiago pitched shutout ball through the fi fth, and Rayan Hernan- dez replaced him to start the bottom of the sixth. Salvador Justo pitched the eighth and Cris- tian Quintin the ninth for the Hawks. “It’s better to play this way tonight than tomorrow,” was the observation manager Kyle Haines made of his Vol- canoes after fi rst just saying they “didn’t play that well.”
