HOWALD Of the Keizertimes Throughout the summer, McNary High School senior Hayden Sader – and a number of other McNary students – pitched in to help prepare the way for the Celtics’ new turf fi eld. They raked, hauled, dumped, leveled and performed almost innumerable small tasks, but for Sader there was one part he won’t forget anytime soon. “When we were surveying we had to dig through and put in stakes. That gravel is so thick and we were out here hammering away at it on some really hot days,” he said. We see what’s on the inside Still, he was proud to say he had a hand in building it when future Celtics took the fi eld on Blue Day, Aug. 22. For senior Jason Sperle, getting involved in the project any way he could was a matter of pride. “I really wanted to take part and help do the little things. That’s something I wanted to do as a senior and it shows what our program is all about,” Sperle said. The process of installing the turf involved a three-month timetable that included excavat- ing the old fi eld, upgrading drainage systems, fi lling in with new foundation material, level- ing it off, laying down new turf, stitching it to- gether with a sewing gun, clipping out sections for logos and numbers, gluing the pre-made numerals and letters down, adding sand and plastic infi ll, and laying down asphalt on the ar- eas the turf didn’t cover. They also added three large I-beams to reposition the old scoreboard.
