Actually, it was a large mock-up of one sign, but that was all KPIC members need- ed at their July 21 meeting. One of the main tasks for KPIC is to highlight items of historical signifi cance and interest in Keizer. The latest project to exemplify that is a project to create a sign with details and photos from his- torically high fl oods in Keizer. Floods being researched are ones from 1861, 1890, 1943, 1964 and 1996. Over the last several months, KPIC members have been scouring through web- sites and books trying to fi nd Keizer-specifi c information and photos of the various fl oods. The sign looked at by KPIC members at the most recent meeting was a rough draft of the information that will eventually be on display by the Willamette River at Keizer Rapids Park, along with a marker in the water in- dicating the high points from each fl ood. Anita Zahniser suggested keeping wording to a mini- mum. “People want to just see the photos,” Zahniser said. “Do it with short wording.” That idea sounded good to KPIC chair Jill Bonney-Hill, who is compiling information about the 1861 fl oods. “I thought maybe a para- graph or two on each fl ood in this area,” she said. Erica Hedberg, who gath- ered information for the 1890 fl oods, also agreed. “I wouldn’t mind if mine was scaled down,” Hedberg said. “I like the idea of pictures with a couple of short things.” Zahniser had another sug- gestion. “We could do just captions specifi c to pictures and also maybe some wording that ties it all together,” she said. Bonney-Hill expanded upon the idea. “Maybe we can have some- thing along the bottom direct- ing people to more informa- tion, either the city website or our Facebook page,” Bonney- Hill said. That led to one of the lon- gest discussions of the night: citing where the information and pictures came from. “I got the information from somewhere; do we need citations?” Hedberg asked. “I just noticed there weren’t any citations.” Bev Ecklund, who is work- ing on the 1996 fl ood, fi gured being cautious was best. “The librarian in me has alarms going off,” Ecklund said. “I’m not sure if anyone is going to be worried about the text. But if we post a picture from 1996 and someone sees it and is not credited, we may have issues. I know a lot of the pictures are from the Oregon Historical Society website or libraries. I would be cautious using pictures until we get permission. We can just ask them.”
